Located in the historic heart of Shanghai, the first store of this playful fashion brand, is slightly set back from the street. Inspired by its small scale surroundings we wanted to work with a more abstract idea of what a new home could be like.  The store settles into its new neighborhood with a sequence of rooms, carefully positioned in accordance to the original structure. The spatial experience of the rooms and corridors lead to an intimate introduction of the brand. Historical BackgroundThe Plange Mill complex, constructed between 1906 and 1934, originally functioned as a wheat mill and stands as a key example of early 20th-century industrial architecture in Düsseldorf. Over the years, the site transitioned from a bustling facility to an abandoned industrial space. In recent decades, it underwent an impressive transformation, evolving from neglect to a vibrant waterfront campus. This project incorporated a significant addition and conversion of a former retail building that was being used for church services into eight dramatic new co-living units.  Each unit contains six, en-suite bedrooms with common living spaces. Kaomai Tea Barn is a continuously adaptive-reuse project within Kaomai Estate 1955, the revitalized project of a multi-decade tobacco processing plant estate in Chiang Mai. In 2018, Kaomai Estate 1955 was awarded by the 2018 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in New Design in Heritage Contexts category. As part of the incremental plan to unite new commercial programs in the estate, the project location is carefully placed to respect, yet link the surrounding ecology, landscape and existing buildings together. The Writer's Block is an award-winning 1,500 square foot live-work loft designed as a creative production nook within a historic warehouse building. The space was purchased by a couple, one a New York Times bestselling author and the other a game designer. The unit was not intended to be their primary place of dwelling, and they approached CHA:COL for it as a compact urban getaway. Their work involved writing, drawing, music and game design within this getaway. They also needed it a place of respite between extensive book tours and travels.
