Wabamun Lake Cabin
Situated on Wabamun Lake, Josh Kjenner Architect completes a contemporary cabin which offers a retreat for a young family an hour just outside of Edmonton. The homeowners—an academic and an entrepreneur—grew up spending summers at Alberta lake cabins and envisioned this as a place to recreate those memories for their two young children where kayaking, skating, hockey and tobogganing unfold through the seasons.Designed and built during the pandemic with budget in mind, the brief called for warmth and comfort, but without excess—something that felt like a true cabin while still accommodating big family dinners and weekends of hosting. Lloyd Hall Renovation, Banff Centre for Art and Cr
Renovation of an existing 1970s building by Rule Wynn and Rule Architects. The original building was built in three phases from 1965 to 1970. The architectural use of exposed natural timber and dark colour visually unifies the original elements with the new additions, and reinvigorates a building that sits at the centre of campus. The renovation consists of a performance upgrade to the exterior windows and walls, a new exterior vertical wood fin cladding treatment, and an entry pavilion from the drop-off area. The design approach respects the original International Style, buts uses colour and materiality to let the building recede visually in to its National Park setting. The existing Lloyd Hall sits above the tree line when seen from a distan... More

Torys LLP, Calgary
Underscoring the creativity of the legal mind at workToronto-based Torys LLP, founded in 1941, is a top-tier North American practice representing prestigious companies in Canada and internationally. After completing the renovation of Torys’ Toronto offices, KPMB was invited to design their office in Calgary.Consistent with the Toronto offices, the plan order uses the same guiding principles: the ends of corridors are kept open, offices have glass offices fronts, and the circulation corridors are generously proportioned to act as gallery space to showcase their Canadian art collection.Like Toronto, Calgary also conducted a design competition for an integrated art work. The selected artist, Graham Gillmore, created two walls in the reception... More

Commonweatlh Community Recreation Centre
Located on a prominent civic precinct, the new development consolidates the once residual condition of the site into a revitalized, 24/7 urban park space and event destination. It is a joint-use partnership between the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club; combining football operations, stadium programming, and a community centre. The facility adaptively reuses the 1978 stadium fitness centre and connects these user groups over 4 storeys through a cascading promenade.
Three primary masses – Field House, Aquatics and Gymnasium – respond to the dynamic triangulated geometries of the site and frame a central lobby space, ‘the Social Heart’. These in turn define three exterior forecourt spaces.
The building responds to... More
