The Pêro de Alenquer houses is a small residential project with three apartments located in the Foz area of Porto, Portugal. This devolpment comprises a series of 3 modern houses designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing urban fabric while offering contemporary living spaces. The project, in this really narrow plot, emphasizes a harmonious relationship between architecture and its surroundings, utilizing materials and forms that reflect the local context. Each residence is thoughtfully designed to maximize natural light and provide private outdoor spaces, enhancing the quality of life for its inhabitants. Our architecture studio was entrusted with the rehabilitation design of one of Porto’s most iconic and historically significant buildings. This classified property demanded a highly rigorous and respectful approach to its architectural recovery. Starting from an existing abandoned space, the aim of the project was to install three psychology offices, supported by a reception, a waiting area, two storage/technical areas and two sanitary facilities (men, women + reduced mobility). What we see, what look at us The visitor is guided by the presence of three arches. The first one, a welcoming green Guatemala marble surface, invites you to enter the space. When gently merged with the interior, the visitor anticipates the second arch, located at the end of the exhibition space, in a pale green shade in daylight, or vibrant, but diffused color, at night, changing the real temperature, eluding the observer's perception. The third inverted arch located at the upper floor, at the end of the private consultation offices, doubles as a viewpoint to the street or, when perceived by the user, an invitation to explore when entering the store. Initially, the project involved the interior refurbishment of a studio, built on the roof of a multifamily housing building. When we started the demolitions, we found that the roof consisted of various extensions with different heights and materials of poor technical quality, and the exterior walls offered no thermal insulation.   Thus, a complete exterior and interior remodeling was carried out, with a new metal structure and roof.   Being a small apartment, we opened the space by limiting the compartmentalization to the bathroom and bedroom. The original two semi-detached houses design were done during the 1930. The house was developed to a doctor were the ground floor, in the main façade, was to his own practise. During the 60´s the house underwent enlargement works where lost the characteristics of the original design.   Different materials and spacing scales were mixed without any criteria with the original project. There were clear two eras inside the house and not related between them. From the beginning, the client expressed the wish to create a new concept of a first hemodialysis center with exclusive valences to the patients, but at the same time the new Nordial Center was not to look or feel like a hospital... So, what we were not supposed to do was a hospital like building: elevators and indoors corridors, flanked by countless doors leading to rooms or examination rooms, a waiting lounge at the end of the hall or next to the elevator and a cafeteria in the lobby.
