Swiss architecture studio BARD YERSIN architectes has completed the transformation of a nineteenth-century farmhouse in La Bruyère, Vuisternens-devant-Romont, Switzerland. The structure is typical of the region, where dwelling and agricultural functions are housed beneath a single roof. Rooted in the language of traditional farm architecture, Timbertop is a contemporary retreat conceived as a weekend home for an active family of five. Perched on a hilltop clearing, the residence offers sweeping views of southwestern Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment and its iconic terrain of undulating farmland and forested ridges. The 200-acre property is almost entirely woodland and home to deer, porcupines, and wild turkeys. The house responds directly to its agricultural surroundings, where olive trees and vineyards define the landscape and inspired the spatial and material decisions of the project. This structural rehabilitation and thermal conditioning project transforms a hut into an autonomous and comfortable refuge, completely integrated into its natural environment. Located in an area isolated from any urban centre, the intervention provides the building with self-sufficient systems for electricity, domestic hot water (DHW) and drainage, thus guaranteeing its functionality and sustainability in a remote context.
