Richly appointed, our client’s condo on Nicollet Island presented the opportunity to create an atmosphere, spaces to display their art collection and a highly detailed primary suite.  JMAD JMAD JMAD JMAD Architect James McNeal started with the stair railing that connects the upper floor to the suite. The suite was tight on space, so we wanted to use details that would open up the space without eliminating any. Since the tub takes up so much space, we decided to make the tub an art and water feature - with a hand-carved dragon serving at the helm. The concept hotel "Mutis" located in Indonesia. This project represents our search for combinations of different stylistic directions. We experimented a lot with geometric shapes, materials and furniture. If one has clear understanding of individual housing requirements, they can create an ideal environment for a particular person. This apartment does not have such usual pieces of furniture as a sofa in the living room or a dining table in the kitchen area. The client had a clear understanding of what they would like to see at home, and what they were ready to dispose of according to their lifestyle. In the surrounding is the countryside landscape, in a 53 yr old Japanese house of 80 tsubos, the young couple and their children purchased it for residence and decided to renovate. Tapping into the pulsating, dynamic and fresh youth culture – Epic is designed to bring together the vibrant potential of youth and the colourful vibe of the space – creating a visual dialogue in itself. The whole project is divided into two major moods – the first two floors are a casual, young café and the top two are more refined to serve to the club likers. The center of attraction is the youthful design of the café, whether it is the vertical circulation throughout the space, like the canary yellow helical staircase or the quirky lights instilled in the truss accentuating it. ​This project is located in Beijing​’s historic center, in an area full of hutong laneways and ancient courtyards. It’s a hands-on academic project, conceived by master students from Tsinghua University​, in which they investigate how to ‘lever social change in China​ through design’. Students deal with issues from a grounded, built reality, which complements what they learn in the design studio. Kasa Moto is a contemporary Japanese restaurant that pays homage to the ancient ideals of wabi (transient and stark beauty), sabi (the beauty of natural patina and aging) and yūgen (profound grace and subtlety). Located in the heart of Yorkville, Toronto’s luxury retail district, the two storey, 12,000 square foot space is spread out over multiple rooms including a split level main floor, dining/wine room, sizable roof top patio, street side terrace and lounge (Bar Moto) on the upper level. The owner of this apartment had a collection of antique Asian artefacts that were poorly displayed if at all. The design of this apartment sought to create an Asian influence in all rooms and to marry the wonderful collection of artefacts and furniture with new pieces that made a cohesive design. A jade green colour was chosen as a colour that was used throughout to continue this theme into the bathrooms and kitchen. More
