In the middle of the Flemish fields, we started working on an existing single-family house and adjoining stables. Together with the owners and their recently retired parents, we transformed the existing farmhouse into two homes, one of which is a care home, where it is possible to continue to live for life. HED designed the Sheridan Mason Senior Living Community as a prototype. The two story structure provides assisted living and memory support to seniors and consists of market rate studios, one bedroom, and two-bedroom residential apartments. The goal of Silver Birch of Michigan City was to design a high-quality, sustainable, affordable assisted living facility that is welcoming and a home-like environment to all its residents. It started with the site. Positioning the building in such a way to create a landscape buffer between a smaller scale residential community to the west and an unknown future development site to the east. Next came texture and subtle color changes on the façade; blending the building into both the suburban and rural fabric of Michigan City, Indiana.
