The Shearling
Barn conversion sliding doors in Rutland define The Shearling, a former open-sided sheep barn, transformed into a single-storey, low-carbon rural retreat overlooking Eyebrook Reservoir. Supplied and installed by IQ Glass, the glazing scheme uses full-height sliding doors and tall aluminium windows to enclose the original agricultural shell while opening the living spaces to the landscaped gardens and long views beyond.
Across the main elevations, slim sliding door systems create wide, full-height openings that draw natural light deep into the plan. The main goal of the intervention was to enhance the spatial qualities and physical features of the former Cocchi barn: a clearly legible structural rhythm defined by perimeter pilasters and a row of tall central columns; a large internal volume divided into two areas on different levels; and an impressive roof structure composed of oak trusses and beams.

The former farmhouse from the 17th century is located on the edge of the village centre of Zunzgen at a fork in the road. The building is characterised by the customary local division into separate residential and farm parts, which can still be clearly seen today. Almost four years ago, we started an experiment. Erika and Willi had bought a barn, willing to carry out a major alteration by themselves. The financial means for the conversion were limited, as were the owner‘s craft skills. A sensitivity for architectural issues could not be assumed. For both, the owner and the architects, this project has been an intense yet rewarding journey.

Kindergarten in Renens
In the city center of Renens, halfway between forest and urban density, the aforementioned project brings together several intergenerational and multifunctional programs, such as a kindergarten, a concert hall and family gardens. House DeDe inherits its soul from the site’s past while featuring an adaptive contemporary architecture
House DeDe by OYO Architects is a new private family home situated to protect the existing nature of the surrounding site. Key materials to build the home were salvaged from the broken-down barn on site. Recycled and reused, the barn’s bricks are used to create a volume which inherits the natural authenticity and ‘spirit’ of the site.

A radical approach was required for this converted barn sited in open countryside. The aim was to create a house that sat naturally in the landscape with the appearance of a traditional agricultural building.
The previously poor conversion required a new build. We used the salvaged stonework and added two new wings and a swimming pool. A new build meant the standard of construction and insulation would be of the very highest standard and had the added benefit of being zero rated for VAT.
