co.arch’s project (Andrea Pezzoli and Giulia Urciuoli) in Cervinia is set within the Giomein complex, designed by Mario Galvagni and completed in 1972 on the homonymous promontory, overlooking the Breuil basin and the profile of the Cervino. Conceived during the peak expansion of Alpine tourism—new ski runs, cableways, infrastructure and holiday residences—Giomein interprets the mountain not as scenery but as a morphological and perceptual system against which architecture chooses to measure itself. This 250-square-meter residential project, executed by designer Bibigul Orazalina of Design for Happy Life, is a rigorous study of proportions and a synthesis of diverse stylistic influences. A defining element of the design concept was the client’s extensive background living in the United States, which informed the preference for American Classical principles: an emphasis on open, light-filled spaces, large-scale volumes, and functional comfort. The semi-detached house, originally built in the 1930s, is located in a quiet neighborhood of Zürich. It was first renovated in the early 1980s by an architect couple, who introduced the characteristic white floor tiles typical of that period. Ductus undertook a comprehensive renovation, addressing the heating system, windows, bathrooms, surfaces, and fireplace, while maintaining the key features of both the 1930s architecture and the well-executed 1980s renovation.
