Bicycle bridge, Wetteren

The countryside and the rivers In order to innovate and optimize the inland shipping connection Antwerp-Paris, also called the Schelde-Seine Course, bridges all over Belgium and France are being replaced, channels deepened, banks relocated, and quays renewed. This is also the case where the river Schelde runs through the town of Wetteren. The old footbridge that connected the two parts of town, needed to be replaced by a new one that met the demands of higher vertical clearance. Wetteren on the Schelde The new bicycle bridge at Wetteren is aligned with the choir of the St Gertrudis Church and the market square. This has all to do with the ambitious development of the centre of town, branded Wetteren on the Schelde. A new complex of multi... More

The bicycle and pedestrian bridge, Sittard-Geleen

The bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the railway line Sittard-Geleen, a design by architects ZJA, intends to simplify and increase contacts between the city, business park Fortuna and sports area Limburg. The bridge not only lies firmly embedded in the green roadside scenery along both railroad tracks, but it also has an elegant form and subtle details. The chosen form of the hourglass, for instance, wordlessly invites passers-by to come closer and cross the bridge. The bridge as a connecting linkThe bridge offers a natural and smooth connection to the bike paths from four directions. By basing the design on a reduction of the height of the catenary, the maximum difference in height on accessible surfaces could be reduced to just over th... More

Harderwijk Railway Station

The entire area around the Harderwijk railway station has been overhauled to prepare for the new Randstadspoor metropolitan railway network, which will be integrated in the future. The former single-floor intersection between traces and main traffic structure has been replaced by a new tunnel at a new location. This tunnel connects motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to the various sections of the town, as well as providing access to the railway platforms. The square in front of the railway station links all station-related uses and services and serve to regulate pedestrian traffic. The centre of the square features a staircase, designed in warm and attractive natural stone, further enhances its aesthetic appeal. The wide and low stairs, of... More

Europalaan bridge Beek

fast laneLocal government decided on creating a bicycle fast lane between the Dutch cities of Sittard and Maastricht. These ‘bicycle only’ paths offer a fast and safe route for commuters and are aiming to increase bicycle use and decrease road traffic on certain popular routes. We won the design competition for one of the bridges needed. airplane wingThe bridge is located near Maastricht Aachen Airport and the Technoport Europe business park. This inspired us to come up with a bridge cross-section in the shape of an airplane wing. We also ensured the bridge itself appears as a fluent curve and is as slender as can be. curveThe bridge has a gentle slope on either side. By designing a curved rather than straight bridge, we were... More

Nigtevecht bicycle bridge

connectionThis impressively slender, 104 meter long bicycle bridge across the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal near the village of Nigtevecht provides a much needed addition to the local and regional recreational bicycle network. A wildlife connection was created at the same time and location, allowing wildlife to cross the canal and connecting two areas of natural beauty. integrationBefitting the location the bridge design is slender, transparent and low-key. Spatial integration of the long ramps provided quite a challenge, as the required 10 meter clearance results in very long ramps on either side of the canal. pedestriansThe design provides for a flight of stairs on either side of the bridge, offering pedestrians a shorter route. Separating pede... More
