cepezed has moved from its clean-lined office building in the Phoenixstraat in Delft to a listed property more than a century old. The reasons for the move are largely practical: lack of space, the wish for a single communal working space and above all, the nuisance the firm was experiencing from the construction of the railway tunnel in front of its door. This new faculty building for the Academic Biomedical Cluster (ABC) at Utrecht University responds to a 1995 master plan by OMA. The university sought a modest, intelligent and sustainable building to make optimal use of a deep, south-facing site. The new building forms the corner of the existing Academic Hospital. The building successfully strengthens the existing entrance of the hospital and establishes an independent identity within the complex and the campus. Right next to the A2 motorway near ‘s-Hertogenbosch, software company SAP’s new Dutch headquarters presents itself as a dark sculptural mass of basalt with a large glass window. Behind this window an atrium stretches to the building’s full height. Two pavilions designed as separate objects mark this central area. One is a bar area for arriving guests, the other pavilion is used for workshops. Each floor level remains visually connected to the outside world.
