The design ethos focuses on renovating the existing home to incorporate a new study, bedroom, ensuite, and dressing room without compromising its historical integrity. A first floor has been constructed, including a small library, two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Additionally, the project includes the construction of a basement to cater to guests and extended family members, although building it posed a challenge due to its proximity to the water table.

The River View House
With elevated views of the river running through the valley below the site, the house was aptly named the River View House.
Located in Johannesburg, South Africa, the site is nestled amidst a small forest of thorn trees and grassland. The compact, yet steep site presented a gradient of 1:1 which brought with it many challenges, but at the same time Gottsmann Architects saw many more opportunities. This set the tone for the project and so the concept began. Upon approaching the home on street level, a person is led past finely detailed Scandinavian timber screens opening up and leading one across a bridge suspended over water. The large open-plan layout provides unobstructed views of the forest from within the interior spaces of the house.... More

Y House
The design and construction of the Y House has evolved over a 5 year period, the result is a bespoke home designed to the specific needs and requirements of the client. The site is a large corner plot in the garden of the client’s existing home. It has extensive views through pine trees, over fields to the west and north, and residential neighbours to the south and east. Adjacent to the site on two sides is a 3m deep storm drain. This constraint resulted in a pile foundation design solution. The building form and layout evolved through close collaboration and discussion between the client and architect.
