SJD Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona
The SJD-PCCB is a monographic centre dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and research of pediatric cancer, the first reference in Spain and second in Europe.
The project arises from the strategic need to create a monographic center for pediatric cancer care by Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona. The proximity and the need to establish synergies between the both centres posed an improvement in the diagnosis, treatment and research of pediatric cancer.
The PCCB is located between Barcelona and Esplugues de Llobregat, closer to Collserola, the natural park that delimits the city on the west. The Center adapts to the new use through the reform and expansion project. The proposal was to re-inhabit an old teacher center that was pa... More

St. Joseph’s Judy Dow Alexander Cancer Center
HED designed the St. Joseph’s Judy Dow Alexander Cancer Center Addition located in Ypsilanti, Michigan to create more space for the program's expanding needs.
This cancer care expansion was designed to provide a space suited for evolving research and education in oncology while also accommodating the facility’s significant patient population expansion in recent years.
Serving as a clear landmark on the campus, the glass curtainwall design was created to stand out and provide natural lighting throughout the facility. This design denotes its independent identity while the steel structure and interior brick still seamlessly connect it to the core of the surrounding campus. Upon entry into the main atrium, a large glass skylight p... More

Knight Cancer Research Building
Oregon Health and Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute sought a state-of-the-art cancer research facility that would support and facilitate a team science approach. Reducing the number of research floors and increasing the size of each floor allowed us to incorporate communicating stairs, which form functional and visual connections between floors and between research teams. The experimentalist laboratory and office suites are organized in interconnected “neighborhoods.” These neighborhoods retain the modest scale researchers prefer, while providing the flexibility to reallocate space as needed. The extensive use of glass walls creates visual connections that reinforce the collective identity of the Knight Cancer Institute and... More
