The Forest Pavilion
This home is called Forest Pavilion, because pavilions are partly open, and partly closed. They provide shelter, without forgetting place. In a classic pavilion, you often can’t tell if you’re inside or outside; like this home, they are an exercise not in “or” but in “and”. The homeowners, avid gardeners and professional landscapers, prompted the team to work along the grain of the site.

Shigehara Honmachi House
The site is on a slope with the highest northern face bordering the road and hanging south from there. The client wanted a house to accommodate a family of four, including two future children. They also wanted a space for a wood-burning stove and their surfboard. The idea of using the slope to create a space with pilotis on the ground floor was immediately conceived. At the same time, I had the idea of having the living space integrated into the wooden structure. Custom Sandblasted Cedar Panels
Blast-weathered FSC Western Red Cedar is the perfect choice for the Greenpoint Library & Environmental Education Center. WRC ages beautifully from yellow to silver without intervention. Naturally resistant to insects, rot, and decay, WRC can withstand decades exposed to the elements. The high variation between soft and hard grain allows for deep, clearly defined texture, emphasizing the natural and raw character of the wood. The material was sourced specifically for the project from a sustainable, responsibly managed forest, and the shavings from the sizing of the boards (120 50 gallon bags!) were donated to LES Ecology Center, part of the NYC Compost Project. Noe Valley House
IwamotoScott designed this new ground-up house in the Noe Valley neighborhood, as a speculative infill development for a builder in San Francisco whom we've worked together with on several projects. The site is located on a steep street, but has a fairly level topography within the lot, newly opened up by the demolition of a dilapidated small house at the rear of the property.
