Cukrowicz Nachbaur’s concept applies themes from both the built and natural surroundings to a composition of three buildings of varying character, size and height. The three-storey existing structure along with a new two storey nursing home and three storey assisted living centre are brought together around a sheltered courtyard. The nursing home has assumed the height of its pre-existing neighbour, presenting itself as a sensitive extension at the transition point from built to natural. The district centre of Ypenburg, located next to The Hague, was established in the nineties as part of a large city extension for 30.000 inhabitants. According to the original masterplan the district centre was to be conceived as ‘superblock’. This masterplan requirement was transformed step by step. The park was moved from the inside of the block to the outside and situated between the crescent facade and the artificial lake. Much like sports itself, sports facilities are always important sites of identification. Particularly in smaller towns like Cormeilles-en-Parisis, 17 km northeast of Paris, club sport plays a vital role in social life. The new sports center offers optimal training and competition conditions for local teams, amateur athletes and schools.With its silhouette, the design sets a striking mark, but nevertheless blends harmoniously into the loosely built residential area. The purpose of the building is to unite together all of the Athletics Department’s facilities, to connect to other parts of campus, and to provide one building for all coaches, student athletes, and administrators to call home.
