Conceptual design

This project operates on the interplay between matter and perspective. When is something a space between rooms and when is it a room. Is something a floor or a kitchen. Is it inside or outside. A Matter of Perspective transforms a two-level apartment into a narrative about perception of space. Matte glass panels diffusing light and shadows, referencing the steam state of matter, and sliding partitions shifting the occupant’s perspective. K-Thengono Design Studio brings new life to Talaga Sampireun’s Bali location with an innovative concept that diverges from the conventional setup of individual saung (Sundanese huts) and separate dining halls. In the 1850s, Chicago was considered the grain capital of the world. The mill and silo buildings, located primarily within the Fulton Market neighborhoods, are a direct reflection of Chicago’s wheat industry heritage, one of the major industries upon which the city was built. In recent years, as Fulton Market has become more trendy with the opening of new bars, restaurants, residences and offices, many of the protected historic buildings have been renovated. Unprotected historic buildings beyond the district boundaries, however, are routinely threatened with demolition. Three axes form the basis for the guesthouse: public, private, and the relationship of earth to sky. These three axes respond to the site’s topographic undulations, rotation in plan and vertical hierarchy as the landscape slopes up to a gentle hill.  The public axis connects the entry point to an exterior hot springs pool accessed through an underground channel. Beyond the massive entry walls sits a shared dining space with scattered intimate gathering spaces warmed by firewood. At the intersection of the public axis and the vertical axis sits a viewing deck at roof level to admire the Northern Lights. JOA is honoured to participate in the 2019 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Shenzhen). We have always taken the research led perspective as the starting point of the design, trying to discuss the story behind the architecture in greater depth, and present it to the public through the exhibition. Axis Mundi breaks free of this form with its self-initiated proposal for the Whitney Downtown, experimenting—like all good art—with a more creative and challenging design.
