Country Estate is a restoration and expansion of the Wiley House, an original mid-century modern residence by architect Philip Johnson. This project integrates new structures into the tranquil Connecticut setting with contextually respectful design and a commitment to conservation strategies. A new barn was constructed to function as a gallery for the expansive art collection of the new owner. The new fitness facility for Greens Farms Academy has an important role marking the vehicular entrance to the school. A cantilevered canopy reaches out and serves as a strong visual gesture while also serving as a shading device for the western facing glazed facade. This building utilizes a cost-effective, prefabricated structural system clad in fiber cement to create a refined shed for new 8 court squash facility for Greens Farms Academy, a private K-12 school in Westport, Connecticut. A school-bus yellow paneled frame marks the entry portal. Two cylindrical chimneys encompass all the exhaust from the building while creating a balanced façade. This project created a permanent home for the performing arts program at Greens Farms Academy, a private pre-K through 12 school in Westport, Connecticut. The challenge was to position a large theatre, gallery, and additional classrooms in a prominent location on the school’s 40-acre campus overlooking Long Island Sound. Rooted in a traditional setting, beachside creates the appearance of a traditional home from afar, with a very contemporary spin. The gabled forms and familiar door and window openings respond to the regional and historic precedent of the area, however the fiber cement siding, zinc roof and steel sash windows announce the present. Compelling and ambiguous, this underground pool house is experienced as an apparition in the landscape along the coast of the Long Island Sound. Set into a subtle incline just before the land drops off to meet the beachfront, it is almost invisible as one approaches from the main entrance of the estate. From this point of arrival, the only hint of what lies below is a series of glass skylights cut into the ground. The structure faces the sound through full-height glass walls that bring daylight into the interiors and retract to give access to a terrace that is shaded by a brise-soleil.
