Villa JJ

Villa JJ is located on a cliff on the shoreline of Stockholm's southern archipelago. The climate here can be harsh, nature is shaped by rain and storms as much as by sun and drought. The local building tradition is characterized by simple buildings, often gathered in clusters to provide protection for each other, such as fishermen's sheds or small farms. The houses were low, clad with wood boards, gray or almost white. Mikael Lundblad Mikael Lundblad Mikael Lundblad Building in this environment is about working with the few materials that the site and circumstances provide. The building tradition is our inspiration, but the conditions today are not quite the same as before. We want to maintain the attitude of traditional con... More

Characterised by functionality and sustainability, Swedish architecture emerges from its deep connections to the Nordic Landscape. With a rich history dating back to 800AD, Sweden's architectural style has evolved to reflect shifting cultural and societal influences. From medieval castles to modernist homes to sustainable buildings that harmonise with the natural environment, the country boasts a prolific architectural landscape. A recurring theme in Swedish architecture is the display of profound respect for heritage and nature while forging ahead with innovative design that reflects the principles of simplicity, functionality, and light. Keeping the threads of modernism intact, Swedish architects harness light, textures and natural eleme... More

Liljevalchs Konsthall

INVITED COMPETITION - HONORABLE MENTION"A proposal with great architectural qualities with an autonomous expression of seldom seen. Timelessness and beauty mediated in the draft that becomes a work of art in itself."StockholmLiljevalchs’ new extension marks itself as an explicit part of the place, a sculpted volume with its own identity. The extension interacts with Liljevalch existing compact, closed body, reads its architecture and organization, and allows a contemporary sculpted imprint subscribe at the site. Liljevalchs to with its garden café Blue Gate is a cohesive system that clearly defines an outer boundary, where mass and scale creates inner and outer rooms that clearly relates to the art gallery's complex context and to the city.... Nannberga

We found a small granary for sale outside Borlänge, in the Dalarna region of Sweden. It was a modest construction in design and dimensions, but expressed an uncompromising constructive attitude that interested us: Timbering as pure tectonics, materialized as a precise joining of individual elements that form a coherent unity. The house was taken apart and moved to an old pasture along the shores of Lake Hjälmaren, a few kilometers from Arboga. Concrete plinths were cast as a new foundation before the timber structure was put back up again. Between the 15th and the 16th timber row, a new load-bearing wooden framework was installed to allow for a full-height upper floor. Then the rest of the timber structure and the old roof was put in p... More

Aula Medica

The abstract building cladded in six different types of glass stands like a bowl at the core of medical university Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. The auditorium seats 1000 persons. As Karolinska Institutet selects the Nobel Prize laureates in medicine or physiology, there has been a demand for a large venue for their lectures. The façade of glass on a glulam structure is wrapped around the building that leans heavily over the highway, announcing the presence of research and education in the cities of Stockholm and Solna. Summer houses in Slavik

The summerhouse is located between two fjords on the Swedish northern west coast. The site is surrounded by a national park and nature characterised by rounded granite rocks and windswept trees. Other houses in the area, mostly summerhouses from the 1950s, are more of a pavilion type than representative of the local building tradition. For many generations, members of a large family have spent their summers here. There are no visible plot boundaries, living standards are simple, the sea and the surrounding nature are the main attractions. As the family grows, more houses are built. The latest addition to date is a house located on one of the highest points in the area designed for one of the sons, with room for his family and guests.... More

Domkyrkoforum

The site of the new cathedral forum is central Lund, in direct connection to the cathedral itself. On the site is situated the existing "Arken" house, which is a building of historical value. The new building aims to integrate itself in the urban fabric in a natural way, by adapting to the scale and lines of the surrounding cityscape. At the same time our vision has been to create a contemporary building that adds a new layer to the many historic layers that characterize the urban environment of central Lund. The shape of the building creates new adjacent public spaces: The entrance plaza towards Kyrkogatan street, the entrance passage facing the cathedral, and a triangular square towards Kungsgatan street. In addition to the welcomin... More

Woodland Crematorium II

Quotation from the jury assessment "A Stone in the Forest is the entry which best understands the wholeness of the Woodland Cemetery and listens to the site with the greatest empathy. The project adds one more character-laden part to the Woodland Cemetery experience. A Stone in the Forest creates a journey in both an internal and an external landscape. The proposal A Stone in the Forest merges with the Woodland Cemetery’s distinctive array of buildings without repeating, imitating or even alluding to earlier buildings. It is sui generis, characterised by a refined simplicity, a down-toearth feeling of form, colour and weight, with an architecture verging on the ascetic. The jury has attached importance to the experience of the new cre... More

Naturum Kosterhavet

From the architect. Naturums, Swedish Visitor Centres, are information and exhibition locales in national parks, nature reserves, biosphere districts and at world heritage sites in Sweden. The construction of naturums represents one of the largest architectural ventures undertaken by the Swedish state in modern times. Naturum Kosterhavet stands on the island of Sydkoster, Sweden’s most westerly outpost. The building’s irregular shape is determined by the site’s available permitted construction area. The long sides consist of repeated gables, six facing the sea and five towards land. These are linked by diagonal roof-trees which together create the roof’s zigzag pattern. Instead of taking the form of a traditional row of boathouses the na... More

Kville Saluhall

KvilleSaluhall is the result of a public competition for a market hall in 2011. Our winning proposal was based upon the idea of the market hall as a super public building. It’s an unusualand valuable building typology in the city, comparable to the railway station or the library. Here you don’t need a ticket to enter and you’re not obligated to consume. This led us to propose a building as an open, non-hierarchal structure, capable of change over time and with clear visual connections to the surroundings. When the urban development project “Kvillebäcken” is finished in 2017, the market hall will serve as a link between new and existing areas around Vågmästareplatsen tram station, 5 min from central Gothenburg. The market hall wants to b... More

Plus house

Plus House is a pre-fab two-storey house with the generic proportions of a traditional Swedish barn house. Instead of windows positioned like regular “holes” along the walls, entire sides are glazed. On the entrance floor both long walls are glazed. On the upper floor the gable ends are glazed. Seen in plan, these two lines of vision straight through the building are perpendicular like a plus sign. This is the first house we designed for pre-fab manufacturer Arkitekthus, in their catalogue named AH#001. More

Villa M2

Villa M2 is a single-family house situated next to a lake, which was once a lime quarry. The south façade, facing the lake, incorporates generous windows and a minimally defined space to accommodate the family’s social activities and to encourage the integration of the house’s interior with its surroundings. Most of the interior furniture and fittings were custom designed for the project by the architect. The main 60m2 volume on the ground level incorporates the kitchen, dining and living area. The main focus of the custom-designed kitchen is a steel topped island unit, which features integrated hobs and a large wood cutting board that slides to conceal the large sink. The master bedroom and bathroom lies on the second floor within... More
