The second tallest building in Reykjavik forms part of an ambitious project which is intended to counteract the raw climate with elegant, optimistic and radiant architecture. The architecture contrasts not only with Iceland’s meteorological conditions, but also with the economic climate in which the tower was realised. The plans were drawn up in the years of prosperity, but the construction itself took place in the economically dramatic year of 2008, when the full extent of the financial crisis became clear.

Fiteco Office Building
Increasingly, city centres as well as suburban areas are seeing the construction of compact buildings housing multiple functions, motivated by considerations of sustainability. This makes it possible to improve the internal organisation, reduce construction costs and the environmental footprint. The building in the commune of Changé (4 km from Laval), designed by Colboc Franzen & Associés architects for the accounting group Fiteco and housing both the Fiteco headquarters and a local branch office, is a good example of this strategy.
