When Macks Creek, Missouri (pop. 244) lost its township status in 2012, its rural school became the last remaining official symbol of its close-knit community. Perched atop a hill overlooking the old downtown, the school needed improvements for its youngest students, and in 2014, the community saw the opportunity to exhibit their hometown pride. The resulting project replaces a failing WPA era building while improving site circulation and reinforces the school’s identity and visual presence in the community.The addition of nine classrooms extends an existing double loaded corridor from the school, reaching out to the street and creating an opportunity for views to and from the addition. Buddhanimit Temple, located in a rural community in Udon Thani, Thailand, is a temple school that provides free education for families who are unable to afford public education. Due to increasing number of students enrolled as novice monks, an extension dormitory building is required. The original brief of the project calls for a two-storey dormitory building under a donated 6 million baht (EUR.154,000) budget. After thorough site inspections and workshops with monks and novices, the architects proposed an economical scheme to renovate an existing abandoned classroom building on site into a dormitory. The owner of this Washington DC row house requested a totally open space for entertaining, with a modern and warm ambiance. The fireplace wall and kitchen island became the two focal points that define the formal and informal gathering spaces. Dark porcelain tile and fumed larch surround the fireplace, while contrasting glossy white cabinets and a 15’ long Equatro marble island top centers the kitchen zone.The rear wall was replaced with sliding glass doors in order to physically and visually link the new rear deck with the interior spaces.
