House Split
The residence sits on a hill slope between two adjoining roads sandwiching it. To retain the nature of the sloping site and to play with it there is least possible cut and fill between two plots.Accessed from the road above on the east, a series of landscaped steps go down to lead to the main door. The plan is programmed to act as two volumes, one for the living spaces, bedrooms, toilets etc. and the other volume housing the service areas like the kitchen, dining and utility. The two volumes are bridged together by a third transparent volume that both acts to provide enclosure and also opens up the interior into the exterior. Betap
The new Betap showroom also houses a laboratory space for research and development. Betap is a family owned company for tufted and needlepunched carpets. Betap aims to develop their new floorcoverings in close participation with its global customers. To this end the R&D offices and showroom are integrated in one space.In line with the identity of the company, the design for the new showroom is pragmatic and thorough. A double height reception area has a huge window providing a visual connection to the factory floor. The reception area flows into the highly representative office space and connects to a showroom area one level above. Mason Avenue
Located in the historic Wrigley Building, Mason Avenue Investments is the new headquarters for a privately held investment company. The client requested a quietly elegant office that could adapt to the future needs of an evolving business.Some negotiation was required to find the right balance between a contemporary interior and the historic surroundings. The resulting design strikes a modern chord with bright white terrazzo floors, while rich millwork and spare use of traditional moldings are a nod to the historic context. Strict historic preservation requirements and a desire to maximize natural light resulted in most enclosed space pulled away from the exterior window line, exposing stunning treetop views over the Chicago River.
