Rungestrasse

Transforming part of a former office building from the early 1930s into an apartment we were confronted with the challenge to maintain the spaciousness that its open plan had to offer and refrain from subdividing it into a series of isolated rooms. Photo by Tobias Wootton Photo by Tobias Wootton Photo by Tobias Wootton Photo by Tobias Wootton The first architectural element we introduced was therefore a shelf featuring five bays and two levels. Each bay houses an individual environment: an entry zone, a cooking area, a work-space, a bathroom, a reading nook, a sleeping loft, … . Meandering around the shelf leads to the bedroom. Snøhetta composes a cosmic symphony in Orionis, a new planetarium and observatory in northern France

Snohetta introduces Orionis, a new cultural destination in Douai, France. Encompassing a planetarium and observatory, the design exudes an elliptical form, drawing cues from the movement of stars. Nestled on a prime site between the Scarpe River, an archaeological museum Arkéos and a nearby residential complex, Orionis strives to seamlessly link the various facets, fostering an inclusive and stimulating environment for its users. The design concept presents a cohesive structure characterized by curves that gracefully envelope the twin domes housing the observatory and projection room. The design is based on a system of Bézier curves, giving each space a unique and distinctive quality, creating a completely unexpected experience high above the streets of Beijing. Taiyuan Botanical Garden

The project was launched with the ambitious objective of transforming a former coal-mining area into a landscape park, which is not only a model for the landscape design that is so essential in China, but also contains a building infrastructure that can be used for researching into and offering people access to and information about natural ecosystems. The politically stated need to create high-quality leisure areas in or close to cities and to find ways of controlling the resulting large numbers of visitors formed the basis for the definition of a spatial programme. This envisaged not only the creation of the landscape park itself, but also the construction of a central entrance building with a nature museum and administration facility, th... More

Taiyuan Botanical Garden Domes

The new Taiyuan Botanical Garden Domes complex in Taiyuan, China features 3 domes ranging from 43m to 88m in diameter and from 12m to 30m in height. The largest of the three domes is the longest clear-span timber gridshell (non-triangulated) in the world. All three parabolic gridshells comprise light doubly curved glulam beams, arranged in two or three crossing layers. Through the cooperation of all team members on three different continents in less than a year, a unique series of long-span timber structures was delivered to the city of Taiyuan, providing a beautiful, world-class attraction that emphasizes both sustainability and structural integrity.
