Historic Randle Highlands Early Learning Center
The Old Randle Early Childhood Education Center, located at 1650 30th St SE in Washington, DC, showcases an impressive blend of historic preservation and modern educational design. Completed in 2022, this $14 million project, led by MOYA Design Partners in collaboration with Hord Coplan Macht and Keystone Construction, revitalized a 1911 Elizabethan Tudor-style building, one of the oldest school structures east of the Anacostia River.

Woodlands Nursery & Forest School
The new on-campus Woodlands Day Nursery and Forest School for the University of Staffordshire puts play, development, wellbeing and nature at the heart of early years education, in a net zero carbon building.
Providing 100 childcare places, and designed at a child friendly scale, the new nursery includes a state-of-the-art digital observation suite for trainee teachers, social workers and university students. The associated forest school is an independent space for school-age children to engage in outdoor learning activities that develop skills and knowledge not possible in their classrooms.

Early Learning Centre
Smith Architects has a long history of designing and developing quality early childhood centres. Fletchers (previous owner) approached us to discuss buying and developing Clark Boarding house (constructed in 1880 by the Clark family as philanthropic housing for workers at their brickworks, Clark Boarding House in Hobsonville, Tamaki Makarau Auckland) into an ECC to provide an amenity for the homes that they were building around the site. Now owned by Wright Foundation, the heritage building has been restored into and early childhood centre. Its original design featured unique large-format hollow glazed bricks and an innovative underfloor hypocaust heating system, utilising surplus heat from the nearby kiln.

Collaborating with Gensler Architect, our goals are to create an efficient layout and playful environment that can enhance learning for children in a heritage building in downtown Toronto.

The daycare consists of different age groups. With careful study of the existing site condition, we were able to prepare flexible and convertible classrooms that could accommodate toddler, preschool or family group depending on children admittance. The layout of each classroom is very clean without any blind spots for teachers, which they can focus on taking care of each child’s needs.
