taller11 creates an energy efficient house of two halves

Catalan architectural studio taller11 has created a house of two halves in Vilafranca, a center for the wine growing industry around 50 kilometers west of Barcelona. A home for a couple and their two children, the house, curiously named CASA0006, has a party wall on its south-west side and a vacant plot on its north-east side. Budget constraints and a request by the client that the home should have two or three bedrooms and several multipurpose spaces, resulted in a clever design layout. Atzar López Vilanova taller11 A house of two halves, taller11 placed the bedrooms and living areas in a heated volume of massive mortar block masonry. On the other side of this, the studio created a winter garden/sunroom — a... More

Fairway Independent Mortgage

Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation (Fairway Mortgage) is a national mortgage lender that has helped thousands make home ownership a reality since its founding in April 1996. Headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, Fairway Mortgage has experienced exponential growth in recent years and in 2015 was at facility capacity. Working out of multiple office buildings around town, leadership decided it was time for a brand-new headquarters, one that could grow with the company and promote sustainable, energy-efficient operation. Having previously worked with Excel Engineering (Excel), a full-service architectural and engineering firm, Fairway asked Excel to review its schematic building plans. After an initial analysis of Fairway Mortgage’s... More

Stamford on the water

Sophisticated Empty Nesters enlisted us to transform their 1950s French country style house into a home that better matched their modern design sensibilities.  White shiplap vaulted ceilings draw the eyes towards gorgeous views of the harbor available from nearly every room. The music room, with its steep pyramid-shaped roof and arched dormers, is one of the family's favorite additions to the house. What makes it so special is the magical way that the room's curves and angles accentuate sunlight pouring in through the arched windows. The uniquely shaped space also has wonderful acoustics, ideal for enjoying melodies played on the grand piano. More

SkyLight House

The project is developed on a reflection about the characteristics of contemporary living that has its roots in traditional functional criterias, but offers beyond that a particular physical, psychological and visual experience. One of the first concepts implemented during the creative process corresponds to the predominant visual interplay between one volume and another, from one space to another. The architecture must allow a complete and global reading of the volumetry from the inside while respecting the spatial subdivision between «public space» and «intimate space» necessary for the family. The unifying element that will allow the comprehension of the space as a whole corresponds to the core of circulation, which develops over the whol... More

Mr. Go! Table Lamp

“Our goal is to offer a high quality, truly portable LED light especially for those who likes the outdoor, go camping, or simply for lighting up corners where plugging in for power would be difficult.”, said Edmund Ng who co-designed the product. “Mr. Go! would make the perfect gift for anyone. It brings convenient, cordless lighting and USB charging: a 2-in-1 solution. I can imagine it being used like a regular table lamp or as an LED lantern for camping and any other outdoor activities. I can even imagine it being used at restaurants where guests could sit down, view the menus and at the same time charge their phones- a free service to the guests! Casa Nirau

The project foresees the opportunity to use reinterpretation as a consistent creative tool. By mimicking orientation strategy and a very simple functional diagram, the new construction relinks to the notion of history and accustomed-living behavior patterns. Open space allow direct sun light to enter from the south side, east and west side are offset inner plot, so only north side is at property line. The idea is to transit from a 2,754 sq.ft. Old construction to a 1,937 sq.ft. one, mainly same program, roughly different space quality experience. Weather analysis help us to decide various key features: Mexico City climate plays a very important roll, since 70% of the days per year can be used for outdoor living. The main living-dining ar... LE GERMAIN HOTEL & SPA CHARLEVOIX

Architecture by LEMAYMICHAUD Architecture Design, St-Gelais Montminy and Hudon Julien in joint venture. At the heart of Baie-Saint-Paul, Québec, on land that once housed the largest wooden farm in Canada, a modern getaway has taken root. Hotel La Ferme is the most contemporary of country hotels. Its namesake was an iconic wooden farm, which was ravaged by fire in 1997. From its ashes a warm, unique space was created. LEMAYMICHAUD crafted the look and feel of the hotel. Our mandate was to represent the history and culture of the area, to use local items, and to showcase the talents of local artisans. In keeping with its history, La Ferme features barn-inspired wood features throughout the build (think pillars and exposed... More

Housing Complex Bervoets

The new residential district of Bervoets, built in a sylvan environment outside Brussels, is a model of sustainable town planning. This is due first of all to the district’s attractive, timeless layout: the 239 residences and ten ateliers are spread over nine buildings and look out on three internal tree-planted squares, generous and inviting public spaces where residents can encounter one another. There are no cars on the street – they are all in one of three underground car parks. Sustainability and progressiveness also characterise the technologies which have been used in building the district. Electricity and warmth for heating and hot water are produced by means of cogeneration, resulting in significant energy savings. The residences h... More

University of Lucerne’s Main Building

Starting with the Lucerne Central Station, which was built in 1985 by the architectural bureau Ammann und Baumann and its employee at that time Santiago Calatrava, the city of Lucerne began a radical modernisation of the quarter stretching eastwards from the station to Lake Lucerne. The Culture and Congress Centre designed by Jean Nouvel, with its wide overhanging roof, has stood at the lakeside since 2000, and directly next to it, the University’s new main building has recently been completed. Instead of a new building, it is a renovation of the former post office, around which an unusual three-dimensional façade has been placed. The white shell appears to have been intricately folded from the second floor upwards around the five-storey bu... More

Gira automatic control switch 2

Better safe than sorry With its new automatic control switch 2 for high installation areas, Gira ensures double the safety throughout the building: It keeps intruders away on the outside while providing individual comfort on the inside. Because of new detection optics with double sensors, Gira has also improved the detection quality of the switch, in addition to the detection field. As a Standard or Comfort variant, the switch can be used in and around the building according to individual requirements. It can be dangerous if the light suddenly switches off when you are halfway down the stairs. Looking for the next light switch is more than annoying – it's also precarious. Also, if a house is left dark at night or when the occupants... More
