Ossel

On the outskirts of Brussels, we took over a 100-year-old long-gabled farmhouse on a large plot. The existing main building was retained, but the layout was completely revised. A characteristic fireplace from the old sitting room was retained, while the rest of the space was transformed into a patio. The existing window openings were retained, leaving a connection to the new rear building from this sheltered spot. Inside became outside and vice versa. Ypsilon Business Photography The habitable area was not to be touched, resulting in a new attached volume at the rear and east side of the main building. A maximum view of the garden behind was created from this new volume, contrasting with the smaller facade openings of the existing mai... More

Hinge Farmhouse

Amid Pajot greenery, we let our creativity run wild on an old farmhouse. The building consisted of a house and a workshop with adjoining outbuildings around a courtyard.  Ypsilon Business Photography In order to include the outbuildings in the house, we needed a link in the form of a central circulation space connecting both buildings and all other spaces. The solution came in the form of a tower-shaped volume that serves as a central stairwell and houses a home office at the top from where the residents can enjoy 360° views over the surrounding fields, woods and courtyard.  Ypsilon Business Photography The home's existing entrance was removed from the courtyard and relocated to the rear of the new hinge. This inte... More

Studio XM infuses a former farmhouse in southern France with monastic architectural qualities and materiality

In the south of France, MA House, in its found condition, was a small former farmhouse sitting in the forest, weathering away for more than a decade and fading comfortably into the landscape. From its peaceful and ruinous state, Studio XM worked to bring back the house to life, infusing it with the monastic architectural qualities known to the valley’s traditional built fabric. Simone Bossi   More than a simple reconstruction, the house was envisioned as a renewal emphasizing the existing house's quirks and careful craftsmanship. The existing structure was carefully dismembered in phases. The footprint and envelope were subtly altered yet remained much in keeping with the proportions of the old farmhouse. Simone... More

Old and New

In the middle of the Flemish fields, we started working on an existing single-family house and adjoining stables. Together with the owners and their recently retired parents, we transformed the existing farmhouse into two homes, one of which is a care home, where it is possible to continue to live for life. Ypsilon Business Photography During this renovation, we endeavoured to disrupt the typical Flemish rural character of the area as little as possible. The shape and continuity of the existing roofs were preserved, along with almost all of the exterior walls of the original structures. The existing house was converted into care accommodation. A new volume was placed within the boundaries of the adjacent barns, housing the living quar... More

Studio Coplanar renovates a countryside house in a white and azure palette

Located in the countryside of downtown Brazil, Serrana House designed by Studio Coplanar is a 30-year-old small house that had remained unused for ten years until the owners decided to renovate it into a holiday retreat. Built on the highest point of the terrain, the house offered the opportunity to integrate nature and frame views of the serene surroundings. Júlia Tótoli The old house was cramped and lacked natural light and ventilation. To overcome this, the internal layout was modified and spaces towards the rear end were opened into small, private courtyards. These courtyards not just provided cross ventilation and light but also made the rooms feel more spacious and open.  Júlia Tótoli... More

Old farmhouse metamorphizes into a modern education centre

Close to Lombergveld/Kesterheid (Belgium), the Paddenbroek building is a transformation of an old farmhouse into a modern countryside education centre. Designed by Jo Taillieu architecten, the metamorphosis places a particular emphasis on the connection between nature, agriculture, tourism and regional identity. Filip Dujardin The original farmhouse and accessory buildings were partially dismantled and refurbished within a volume of glass and steel that acts as a protective shell. Each façade features a unique perspective and connection to surrounding views – and vice versa. Filip Dujardin The generous amount of glazing achieves a close feeling of connection between land and building. At the same time, strategies fo... More

Contemporary design response to surrounding farmhouses results in an expressive new building ensemble

In the village of Frastanz – Gampelün, Austria, a new three-storey residential ‘tower’ and patio with carport are situated in a way that creates a new ensemble with two beautiful existing farmhouses that adjoin. Designed by firm Architekten, the new building’s distinct simplicity contrasts against its richly ornamented neighbours. Adolf Bereuter Ecological and economic sustainability were key design themes for the clients. The main structure is built entirely of timber harvested from the client’s private property. The façade likewise is clad with untreated timber from the site. The same timber lines the interior surfaces, where it is soaped three times for a uniquely soft finish. Adolf... More
