The Tree House
LOC was presented with a modest two bedroom bungalow nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Constrained by a small backyard and a mature protected oak tree in the front, the only possibility for adding two additional bedrooms was to create a second story, one that was constrained by but ultimately become a paean to the tree.

A house is typically not designed to support the load of a second story, so the project was envisioned as a bridge spanning from a new dining room at the rear to a false front facade, thus floating effortlessly above the existing house.

Reflecting the fundamental role that native vegetation played during the project development phase, this Portuguese home by TRAMA ARQUITETOS integrates its exterior surroundings with the interior environment in a powerful way.

Locating on steeply sloping terrain, the site features a grove of centuries-old oak trees on the lower part of the site. The concept for the design started with the idea that the house should line through with the canopy of the cork trees, in a way that suggests a garden floating on the horizon.

* Because of climate change, there is a lack of food, drinkable water and environmental conditions (i.e tides and increasing coastal storms, the rise in sea level) becoming harsher than before in Kiribati. Actually, the inhabitants want to find a way to survive in their country, in these beautiful islands despite the climate change.
