SOM complete a new building at Rice University featuring a unique veil of brick and cast-stone modules
Located at the core campus of Rice University, the new Ralph S. O'Connor Building for Engineering and Science by SOM is now open. Designed to blend with the campus' historic Mediterranean Revival architecture, the building features brick, limestone, and an arcade complete with an elaborate brick and cast-stone veil. SOM Design Principal Javier Arizmendi explains that the design balances historical and contemporary materials, leverages existing circulation pathways, and provides an energetic social and scientific activity hub for the next generation of scholars and innovators.

There are many advantages to using glass as a building component: natural light and exterior views are just two reasons. There are also many disadvantages, including the build-up of heat and a lack of privacy. The latter issues can be resolved by using glass printed with a ceramic frit — once tempered, it becomes a permanent and durable coating. Ceramic frit glazing reduces glare and cooling costs, and can enhance a building’s privacy and its outward decorative form. Diller Scofidio + Renfro complete two ground-breaking buildings for the Columbia Business School
Located on Columbia’s Manhattanville campus in West Harlem, the new home for the Columbia Business School comprises two buildings and approximately 492,000 additional square feet of floor area. The two buildings designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro are the Henry R. Kravis Hall and the David Geffen Hall respectively, which each include numerous multifunctional spaces that foster a sense of community.
