This house refurbishment and glass extension in Sussex thoughtfully combines minimalist structural glazing with traditional craftsmanship, reflecting the careful integration of contemporary architecture within its local context. We wanted to build a very compact structure, which in itself is a sustainable gesture and helps to save energy without resorting to technology. ENHANCEMENT OF THE SITEThe building is locatedon the Island of Nantes, adjoining the blockhouse and a suburban building.The two main facades of the building have different architectural features. On the street the facade is regular and woven. It takes up the composition of its neighbor in the suburbs, to participate in the formation of clear public space. THE GRACEFUL HOUSE

It is “polite architecture” in the historic center of a medieval town, a major restructuring that takes a contemporary language, while continuing to communicate with the historic location. The main facade is decorated with a backdrop and holding up the stairwell outside main entrance: a giant slab of marble structured and supported with stainless steel and carved with a decoration laser to get a good transparency. The scale is purposely distanced from architecture thanks to steel spacers that hold the step in monolithic marble, accentuated by the lighting system that highlights also the perforations of the backdrop.
