10 highlights in the work of Lacaton & Vassal

The work of Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal reflects their ideas that architectural space should be generous, open in use and flooded with natural light. In over three decades, they have designed private and collective housing, cultural and academic institutions, public spaces and urban interventions. Here are 10 highlights in the work of Lacaton & Vassal. © Philippe Ruault 1. Latapie House, Floirac, France, 1993 Latapie House was the architects’ initial application of greenhouse technologies to design a larger, efficient residence, creating space for the clients’ children to run and grow, on a modest budget. Polygal Multi-Wall Polycarbonate Sheets

Polygal Multi-Wall Polycarbonate Sheets are an excellent choice for designers and architects looking for light management options. Polygal sheets can be used in many conventional roofing and glazing applications. Additionally, Polygal sheets offer endless creative and illumination possibilities, making them a great option for interior design. Caption These polycarbonate sheets are virtually unbreakable making them a great alternative to glass. Polygal sheets are lightweight and offer good fire resistance and excellent insulation. Polygal sheets come with one-side UV protection, helping to prevent yellowing and degradation in exterior applications. Colors and specialty coatings are available to help with temperature control for the hot... More

The Greenhouses

In early 2016, Mapos was asked to help concept and design a new retreat and event space in the Hudson Valley, 2 hours North of New York City. The site was a 5 acre abandoned nursery with several greenhouses, warehouses, agricultural sheds, and a two-level house. The structures were all in poor condition and completely overrun by vegetation. The limited budget dictated a strategic and creative reuse of the existing structures which supported the client’s request for an authentic rural retreat that would be attractive to New York City customers. The first step was a thorough and thoughtful walk through of the property to assess what was in reusable condition and what kind of program it could support in the future. Most of the wood-framed green... More

Glass Dome Greenhouse

Our company Biodomes designs and manufactures custom metal and glass geodesic domes. Our goal is to create structures whose function is as important as their form. Geodesic domes are extremely strong for their weight due to their omnitriangulated surface that provides an inherently stable structure, with a natural resistance to external factors like earthquakes up to 8.5 on the Richter scale , winds up to 320 km/h due to the aerodynamic shape and loads up to 20 tonnes per point of structure. They mirror the suns path thus maximizing solar gain all day, all year and they also distribute perfectly heat and sounds. The spherical design results in highly efficient and effective air circulation in both summer and winter. Less surface area makes t... More
