The commission was for a garden on a rooftop. But not on a conventional rooftop, but on top of a module, built, transported, and placed atop a building. It was a project that allowed us to put into practice and showcase our commitment to the fifth facade. We set out to create a diverse organic space, both in species and uses. The couple’s love for with the wonderfully massive bedrock outcrop inhabiting their entire backyard shaped our first conversation much more than the specifics of their new sunroom/home office. We started drawing together right then and soon realized that whatever building we made there had to become, in a way, part of the rock itself. From that “The Grotto” idea formed. With careful coordination between builder and architect, stone from the outcrop is reshaped into a curving wall that emerges from a fold in the rock to embrace the work-at-home area. The present single-family home, located on a small plot in Villa Urquiza, Buenos Aires, stands as an urban house that dialogues with its immediate surroundings. The morphology of the house shapes the corner, contributing to not exhausting the buildable volume, with a manifest intention to maximize the surrounding urban voids. Żorro was inspired by the basic principle of creating architecture, which is to improve the existing functional, aesthetic, and spatial standards found in a given place and context for future residents. Situated in the vicinity of the housing estate of prefabricated buildings, it is shaped by applying the principle of modifying the cubature of a typical building from that time and giving it uniqueness and architectural features of a "superhero" in its location that differs in quality and standard from the surroundings, creating a new model for further transformation of the district and this part of the city. The concept for this backland house, completed in Spring 2014, began with a 100 year old pear tree, a remnant of the site’s history as a Victorian fruit orchard. The house has been built around this tree, creating an internal courtyard that brings light and air to the centre of the plan, while turning the house inward to remain private from the surrounding terraced houses. The ground floor walls are cast in concrete with vertical timber formwork, giving a vertical panelling effect with an expressive natural grain and texture that blends into the surroundings.
