Hospital da Luz Oeiras

The extension of Oeiras Clinic and its transformation into Luz Hospital involved the construction of a new building on the plot of land adjacent to the existing building. In addition to an overall reorganisation of the programme, the core theme when designing this project involved giving the new building an entirely different design to the existing one, whilst conferring a homogeneous image to the whole, an important aspect for the perception of the future hospital. The new building houses the outpatients’ area, examinations, laboratory clinics and some common services such as administrative offices, staff dining room, cafeteria and esplanade. This is a rectangular volume divided by two outdoor patios at either end, to break the mo... More

Olsrød nursing home

Research shows that the architecture itself can be caring and have a positive influence on people’s well-being. The key in this context is to create a human-scaled architecture, as we design Olsrød’s nursing home as a green inclusive village with a homely atmosphere.Village for elderly with cognitive impairment A new living and treatment centre for aging people with different cognitive impairments should be focused on the needs of residents and their relatives. The centre must contain well-known elements from the residents’ everyday life, which can create a feeling of security and contribute to the residents’ control over their everyday experiences. It therefore places a greater demand on the buildings not be... More

The Omni Directional

The OmniDirectional is an internal medicine clinic located in a Japanese suburban town of Hyogo prefecture. The core of the clinic is the endoscopy room, specialty of the doctor, naturally placing it in a central position both spatially and functionally.   The entrance, through a vestibule, gives directly to the central axis of the waiting room, with the reception counter in the back and followed by a large clear glass opening that showcases the endoscopy room as a modern medical tech piece of art.   The room needs to be accessed from both the examination section and the treatment section, while these two require a direct access from the waiting room, and a straight connection to and through the backyard of the clinic.  ... Bed Tower Addition: Henry Ford Allegiance Health

As part of Henry Ford Allegiance’s master plan, they wanted to provide more high-quality, single-occupancy inpatient rooms to deliver additional privacy to patients. To make strides toward this goal, HED first evaluated post-occupancy reviews from existing patient floors and determined best practices for the new rooms. Despite having to work within a set structural grid, the Henry Ford Allegiance addition would be all single bed rooms, and each would allow any level of care. The HED team built full-size mock-ups of the patient rooms and conducted review sessions with both the caregivers and patient advocates to test the space and provide feedback, generating real-time design adjustments to the model.  The result is a univers... Corona Treatment Centre

We are currently experiencing a global crisis that affects almost all areas of public life and has pushed many health systems worldwide to their limit. In Berlin, the decision was made to build a corona treatment centre on the Berlin Trade Fair (Messe Berlin) in order to reduce bottlenecks in the provision of clinical care. In a matter of weeks, a reserve hospital with almost 500 beds was built in one of the exhibition halls, which creates additional capacity should the number of infections increase again.  The layout of the treatment centre is based on modular clusters with 16-24 beds and a central service zone. The structure of the clusters is adjustable depending on the intensity of care. The advantage of the cluster system, in add... More

The parking floors are clad with white cardiographic louvres, followed by a unitised curtain wall for the ambulatory floors and large punched windows for the in-patient floors above. YW Calgary Hub Facility

Designed to be 'a cohesive, supportive environment for women and their families', the vision for the new 127,000-square-foot YWCA Calgary is to provide a safe, healthy and caring environment where wmen in crisis may heal, recover and grow. Along with the principles of trauma-informed design and community engagement, this vision resulted in six design drivers that were applied to every facet of the project: well-being, connected, inclusive, beacon, comfortable and safe. Invited by the YW to design the wayfinding system for their new Hub facility, our team wanted to echo this intent for the facility while providing innovative opportunities for storytelling and human connection. It was clear to us that art, and its power to celebrate culture,... More
