The Pavilion sits within a large estate and began life as a decorative folly before being adapted into a residence. Over time, a poorly conceived mid-century extension compromised both the appearance and function of the original Grade II listed rotunda. The client’s brief was clear: restore the Pavilion’s architectural integrity while expanding the home to meet contemporary needs, without undermining its heritage value. One of Europe’s first arch dams, built in 1695, crossed the upper reaches of the Eau-Froide river, creating an artificial lake that enabled large quantities of water to be released onto timber piled up downstream, propelling it 900m further down the valley where it was used in salt mining and production. The dam remained operational until 1896, collapsing when the river flooded in 1945. In 1981, the ruins were declared “nationally important” and were restored. The project transforms a small eighteenth-century storehouse into a modern dwelling, blending restoration with contemporary design. The original three main facades are preserved while leveraging necessary repairs to introduce a new north-facing wall for indirect sunlight and modern amenities. In the initiation phase and in conjunction with a project developer, we created a plan to convert and transform this remarkable, monumental ensemble located in the heart of Edam. Caption In 2007, a decision was made to fuse three church congregations. A few years later, the result of this fusion was that the Groenland Church was no longer in use. The last mass held in the church was on the 11th of October, 2015. After serving as a church and meeting place for 124 years, the decision was made to sell the entire complex in 2015.
