State Street Townhouse Renovation and Addition

A developer acquired 544 State Street and did a gut renovation of the Brooklyn townhouse after it had been vacant and neglected. Fortunately, through close analysis of zoning law, Studio ST found that the owner could enlarge the building by almost 50% by adding to each floor and excavating the cellar. Photographs Taken by Studio ST The townhouse was divided into four full floor apartments of simple and minimalist design. The typical layout of each includes an outdoor space; two bedrooms on the north side of the building; and the kitchen, dining room and bathrooms at the center. The new south side addition contains the living room and an office. Photographs Taken by Studio ST The cellar houses storage spaces, mechanical rooms, a... More

Native Hostel, Bar & Kitchen

The Native Hostel, Bar & Kitchen is a boutique hostel, bar, cafe, and event space designed for the epicurean traveller and locals alike. It is nestled in an existing 2-story late 1800’s stone building and a mid-century brick warehouse right in the middle of the upcoming transit-oriented development adjacent to downtown. We sought to preserve the history but create something culturally conducive for the current and future generations. By merging all periods and styles, we were able to create something that feels timeless; a place that could have been relevant many years ago, is relevant today, and will be relevant for many years to come. The Native concept is focused around social activity including music, arts, socializing, food, and ent... More

Karnes County Courthouse Restoration

The Karnes County Courthouse Restoration project represents the culmination of a ten plus year effort to return a small Texas County’s beloved courthouse back to its original 1894 glory. Courtyard Renovation at the White Pagoda Temple

This project is located in Beijing’s historic center, in an area full of hutong laneways and ancient courtyards. It’s a hands-on academic project, conceived by master students from Tsinghua University, in which they investigate how to ‘lever social change in China through design’. Students deal with issues from a grounded, built reality, which complements what they learn in the design studio. Surrounded by authentic hutong life, the proximity of the site to the White Pagoda Temple provided a unique experience for our students to investigate. After starting with an 8-week long urban design studio called Sharing Cities, the local government allocated a dilapidated courtyard for us to regenerate, as a test case for... Hybrid Design

This project houses a growing graphic/product design office within an existing brick building located in the Jackson square historic district. The design requires the removal of all the existing interior structure while leaving the existing perimeter brick structure and original front facade intact. The new design is comprised of inserting a steel ribbon frame at the front of the facade to create a large jacketed bay window, and adding a second story structure that connects to an open roof deck area above. A series of steel moment frames are used for the primary structure throughout the building to seismically brace the existing brick walls and to collect the additional loads of the new second story. The roof plane and roof deck have bee... More
