The rebirth of the Prague’s riverfront

The first part of the long-awaited revitalization of the Prague riverfront area called Náplavka is coming to completion, making it one of the most attractive public embankments in Europe. In autumn 2019, nineteen vaults on the Rašín and Hořejší Embankments will be put into use. Six will feature the biggest elliptical pivoting windows in the world, connecting the inner spaces with the riverfront area in a unique way, through the diagonal rotation of the five-meter wide glazed “lenses”. The other spaces will have distinct steel sculptural entrances. The area has gradually grown in popularity thanks to the program activation that began in 2008. One of its initiators was architect Petr Janda, the author of the architectural concept. The alm... More

Native Hostel, Bar & Kitchen

The Native Hostel, Bar & Kitchen is a boutique hostel, bar, cafe, and event space designed for the epicurean traveller and locals alike. It is nestled in an existing 2-story late 1800’s stone building and a mid-century brick warehouse right in the middle of the upcoming transit-oriented development adjacent to downtown. We sought to preserve the history but create something culturally conducive for the current and future generations. By merging all periods and styles, we were able to create something that feels timeless; a place that could have been relevant many years ago, is relevant today, and will be relevant for many years to come. The Native concept is focused around social activity including music, arts, socializing, food, and ent... More

NY State Equal Rights Heritage Center

nARCHITECTS was commissioned by the City of Auburn, NY and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to design the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center and public outdoor space in historic Auburn, NY. The new 7,500sf project transformed a former municipal parking lot into the new civic and cultural heart of historic Auburn, NY, home of Harriet Tubman. In the words of Governor Cuomo, “The Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn honors the efforts and sacrifices made by the many in the fight for justice and equality.” Unlike a museum setting, the building and exhibition is conceived as a portal to the many tourist attractions throughout the state that are connected with the struggled for equal rights.... Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum

This historic Knights of Pythias Hall was acquired in 2002 by the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum with the intent on transforming the building into the museum's exhibit space and community meeting rooms. Located on North Esplanade Avenue in downtown Cuero, Texas, the original building comprises 10,000 square feet on two floors and features some of Wahrenberger’s creative use of fanciful brickwork in the Romanesque Revival style. In 1988, the Knights of Pythias Hall was entered into the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Cuero Commercial Historic District, and in 2003, the Texas Historical Commission awarded the property a Registered Texas Historic Landmark designation. The building is also a contributing structure to Cuero's... More

Karnes County Courthouse Restoration

The Karnes County Courthouse Restoration project represents the culmination of a ten plus year effort to return a small Texas County’s beloved courthouse back to its original 1894 glory. The project was spearheaded by the unwavering support of the local historical society and the County government. One of the goals for the project, other than fully restoring the building, was to ensure the project would have a positive impact on the local community. Our first opportunity came during the programming phase where we worked with the County to establish a building committee of public and private officials to oversee the design and construction of the project. Maximizing the building’s daily activity and community use became the primary emphasis i... More

Courtyard

The entire complex was created by joining multiple adjacent sites, which had access from 3 different old - town streets in Trnava. The sites originally contained multi-storey houses with a passage and were connected through backyards. After uniting these adjacent sites a new open space was created within the central urban structure. The space was then complemented with new objects. This is how the new public space of „Nádvorie“ (Courtyard) was created. The entire complex has access from Trojicne square, Stefanikova street by 3 original entrances with a future plan to enter from Pekarenska street. The reconstructed adjacent buildings were originally built with multi-storey houses with a passage.A diversity of semi-public and private functions... Courtyard Renovation at the White Pagoda Temple

This project is located in Beijing’s historic center, in an area full of hutong laneways and ancient courtyards. It’s a hands-on academic project, conceived by master students from Tsinghua University, in which they investigate how to ‘lever social change in China through design’. Students deal with issues from a grounded, built reality, which complements what they learn in the design studio. Surrounded by authentic hutong life, the proximity of the site to the White Pagoda Temple provided a unique experience for our students to investigate. After starting with an 8-week long urban design studio called Sharing Cities, the local government allocated a dilapidated courtyard for us to regenerate, as a test case for... Hybrid Design

This project houses a growing graphic/product design office within an existing brick building located in the Jackson square historic district. The design requires the removal of all the existing interior structure while leaving the existing perimeter brick structure and original front facade intact. The new design is comprised of inserting a steel ribbon frame at the front of the facade to create a large jacketed bay window, and adding a second story structure that connects to an open roof deck area above. A series of steel moment frames are used for the primary structure throughout the building to seismically brace the existing brick walls and to collect the additional loads of the new second story. The roof plane and roof deck have bee... More

Urban Hospice

NORD Architects has designed a new hospice for the deaconess community, located in Copenhagen, Denmark. The project replace an existing hospice, and is designed to reflect and support the notion that healing architecture has a positive effect on palliative patients. The overall form and concept were heavily influenced by the complex site conditions and the proximity of the neighbouring built context. Within these parameters, the vision was to create a warm and protecting atmosphere. The design incorporates both curved and rectilinear elements that allow for an optimal functional layout, built around a private inner courtyard. The design-process of the building consisted of a close collaboration between architects, clients and users through a... 837 Gastropub

The history of gastropub (a bar and restaurant that serves high-end beer and food) location itself, demanded to make specific interior design decisions. It is located in Rotuses square, in the heart of Kaunas city oldtown by the Communication History Museum. The museum is housed in the former 19th century postal buildings. In 1825 a Mail Department was set up there with a post office, mail coaches, stables and lodging rooms for passengers. We were asked to design a interior for a gastropub and we decided to go with a cozy, warm environment to make people feel comfortable and at home. New vs. old . The interior itself is modern and new, but we left some of the old details, just to remind of all the history that happened there: like the aut... More
