LOC was presented with a modest two bedroom bungalow nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Constrained by a small backyard and a mature protected oak tree in the front, the only possibility for adding two additional bedrooms was to create a second story, one that was constrained by but ultimately become a paean to the tree. This new interior project was born from a couple who live and breathe 'coolness'. Both nearing retirement, the couple wanted to create a home that left a mark and legacy. With a love of music, books, fine wine, family and friends - the creative direction was clear - bring St Kilda to Beaumaris, but capture the essence of both. Add to the fact that the owner was a builder, no challenge was too tough - and with that in mind, our design captured the couple's imagination and results in a space that is inviting for all. The residential area where the site is located abuts a high-speed motorway in the Nishi ward of Niigata, Japan. The area was embanked with concrete retaining walls over 50 years ago and with age, these walls have weakened. Our design approach to alleviate the stresses incurred by these walls was to reduce the soil inside the site and convert the space into a courtyard. We chose to create a scenic space within these walls for the generation to come, who will inherit this site for the next 50 years.     By removing the soil and freeing up the space to create a new basement, a new benefit revealed itself. This contemporary apartment was designed to replace an old childhood home. Despite the limitations in the design of the plan and its inability to create a nostalgic atmosphere, we tried to design the facade of the structure’s corner with playful rainbow colored highlights woods, rusted bars, these colorful windows appears to be a painting for children and infants from the old home reminiscent of sweet childhood times.
