The Scents and the Soil
Innovative Design Meets Sustainability.
A furniture art piece co-designed by the Oval Partnership and HK Timberbank has recently been recognised for its innovative approach to sustainability and design, earning a spot on the FRAME Awards 2024 shortlist for “Furniture of the Year”.
Titled “The Scents and the Soil”, the sculptural concierge counter features salvaged wood from a 400-year-old camphor tree found in a local village in Tai Po, Hong Kong. Felled after being evaluated as a tipping hazard and then reclaimed by eco-startup HK Timberbank, the tree trunk was upcycled via eco-friendly processing and crafted into a functional and sculptural art piece in the form of a concierge counter. Revitalising Old Wanchai
Wanchai’s emergence and growth harks back to the 1900s, when it was known for its Edwardian terraced buildings, a catholic mission, numerous small workshops, and the Island’s first electrical plant. At the request of the Old Wanchai Revitalisation Initiatives Special Committee, Swire Properties submitted a proposal to the Government for a Public-Private Partnership for the Revitalisation of Old Wanchai in general, and streetscape improvement works in and around St Francis Street, Sun Street and Moon Street in particular. The proposal is founded on the belief that Hong Kong's cultural fabric is one of its greatest assets, and that it is possible to develop a sustainable urban future through the development of this unique resource... PMQ
The former Police Married Quarters (PMQ) in Central is a historical landmark which has been restored and adapted to new uses that inspire creativity by providing opportunities for aspiring artists, designers and a complementary mix of retailers to springboard and build their enterprises while creating a platform to promote Hong Kong’s design industry. In designing the interior spaces, the approach taken by The Oval Partnership was to devise a series of minimal interventions within this ‘found’ space to breathe new life into this historically significant building.
