Atelier PRO’s design for IJburg College 2 in Amsterdam was selected as part of a European tender. IJburg College 2 is a new secondary school that will accommodate approximately 800 students at VMBO-T and HAVO levels. The aim is to realise a ‘High Tech Green’ school that fits well with this site. Jan Paul Mioulet Compact Building IJburg College’s main school is located on IJburg, in Amsterdam. For its extension, a branch of the school will be built on neighbouring Zeeburgereiland. Located on a small harbor in Amsterdam’s IJburg district, Jonas demonstrates a holistic approach to sustainability—merging technical innovation, biodiversity, and social well-being into a unified vision. The near-energy-neutral building incorporates 850 rooftop solar panels and a low-temperature heating and cooling system connected to the district network. It also uses a thermal energy system that draws heat and cooling from the nearby IJ lake. Jonas provides 190 mid-market rental studios, 83 owner-occupied apartments, and shared facilities. The Laterna Magica accommodates two schools, a day-care centre and a sports centre. The building is on a large square along a road lined with housing. Education here is based on Natural Learning, with children learning in units. The units are subdivided into different spheres that may focus on games, concentration or group learning. The façade's flatness is due to the urban design; the building line of this three-storey building was required to match that of the façades of the existing houses. It is dark grey, with various colour accents. A gate between the sports centre and the school lends access to the square and to the entrance.
