Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity

Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity (AFSE) is an Indigenous-led social change fellowship program based at University of Melbourne. JCB was appointed as the Lead Indigenous Architect to design an inspiring and culturally safe space for staff and visitors, and a welcoming place for Indigenous and non-Indigenous leaders from Australia and the Pacific to collaborate. Located on level 5 of Building 168 within the UoM New Student Precinct, the existing fit-out was highly cellular, characterised by enclosed offices and meeting rooms, high windowsills and poor visual permeability and natural daylight. Makwa Waakaa'igan Indigenous Centre of Excellence

At the gateway to Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, currently stands Shinhigwauk Hall, the former residential school where children from 184 First Nations communities across Canada were taken from their parents, families, culture and communities. Since the school’s official closure in 1970, the Children of Shinhigwauk Alumni Association, the survivors of the school, have been working with Algoma University to heal this place, and work toward reconciliation through the vision of a cross-cultural learning centre – a facility of healing, cultural preservation, dialogue and transformation. Awen' Indigenous Gathering Place

The Awen’ Indigenous Gathering Place is a new space for sharing, learning, teaching, ceremony, celebration, and contemplation commissioned by the Town of Collingwood to advance truth and reconciliation.The Awen’ Gathering Place was designed by architects and landscape architects of Brook McIlroy’s Indigenous Design Studio in collaboration with renowned educator, artist, and poet Dr. Duke Redbird of the Saugeen First Nation. It is an open-air pavilion sited prominently on top of a hill in Harbourview Park, between the lake and the town.The concept, based on the teachings of Dr. Redbird, is a representation of the layers of the food forest, with each layer linked to one of the Seven Ancestor Teachings.
