Young architects from Minas Gerais, Carla Cruz and Philipe Pinheiro, from the Estudio Sala office, signed the Palm Room project, an environment designed for Casa Cor Minas 2019 that was held at the Palácio das Mangabeiras, a work by Oscar Niemeyer constructed in the 50s in a 42,000 m² of land in Belo Horizonte.   The 75m² space is limited by use and not by physical divisions, and adopts a clear contrast between the austerity and rigidity of the orthogonal shapes of the structure and the organic and fluid character of the layout and furniture. Project in a heritage-listed Jugendstil building. Stylistic solutions were inspired and determined by the numerous authentic interior details. Space proportions and room layouts typical for that particular period of time have been fully preserved; only minor modifications have been made to suit modern family life.   We’ve attempted to keep the balance between the massive volumes of furniture filling the large space and elegantly decorative interior elements. The listed, three-storey gabled house in the middle of the old town of Mindelheim was renovated and redesigned in accordance with the preservation order. The narrow floor plan today houses an apartment and a café on the ground floor. In cooperation with local companies and craftsmen, the narrowest house in Mindelheim with a width of less than three metres could be extended despite the limited space. Instead of the dark and small-scale floor plan of the existing building, open spaces for living, working and sleeping were created. The planning site (D23) is situated in the southwest area of the Seestadt Aspern /1220 Vienna. The three building sections with 4 to 5 storeys and a total of fifty homes are the first freely financed condominiums in this suburb. French windows, brick construction and spaciously dimensioned balconies and terraces ensure an amenable home feeling and revive almost forgotten qualities in housing.A special highlight of the project is formed by the colourfully ornamented cement tiles in the stairwell. In The Hague’s Vogelwijk district in The Netherlands, a minimalist house extension contrasts sharply with the expressive brick architecture of a 1927’s house, exposing the ‘hidden’ qualities.   The house has an original annex at the front side with behind it a beautiful fig tree in the garden that was not visible from inside the old house. Because the new extension extends beyond the existing width of the house, the glass extension is going into a relationship with the existing annex. The design brief for this Berlin flat renovation, in the district of Moabit, not only included the challenge of sensitively updating an Altbau (early 1900's), but included the added element of its charming small size - measuring just 21sqm. Like many buildings of its era, the original layout of the flat had been two very small but separate rooms, presumably one of them being a kitchen, with a shared toilet located in an outbuilding downstairs. In an effort to modernise the flat a previous owner had substituted the former kitchen with a more convenient private bathroom. This project meant to design a loft in an existing attic of the house Wüstemann, Germaniastrasse 6, at the Zurich berg, with a fantastic view over the lake of Zurich to the south, the town to the west and the forest to the east. First the roof was converted into a volume by materializing the floor the same way like the ceiling. Then we inserted a new sculpture in the form of a hammer into the old space. The dimensions of the hammer were the result of the given building laws and the demand of the design. The 'Villa Dalí' clients asked for a very personal house which would reflect their passions. They are nautical minded and have a love of art, sculptures and especially the work of Salvador Dalí. During the initial design discussions 123DV architecture were also showed pictures of ancient Spanish architecture. They were fascinated by the closed white stucco facades and metal fences in Jugendstil design. So the challenge was to combine in one villa the beautiful Jugendstil forms, the closed facades, the treasures of the diving world and the unique works of the artist Dalí.
