Witoca Lab
Facing the options of urbanizing the jungle, deforestation for monoculture, or creating intangible protection zones, there is another option: the chakra. The chakra is a Kichwa concept and, above all, a model of ancestral agroecology based on high biodiversity. This model of land use and management achieves the double goal of conserving the ecosystem while simultaneously producing within it. This strategic approach is the one adopted by Witoca to drive social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The project is located in the community of Huaticocha, in the buffer zone of the Sumaco Biosphere Reserve, in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

The Cave Laboratory for research, architecture & planning is located at the foothills of Pandav Leni where 2nd century BCE Buddhist caves exist on the historic trade route (today’s Mumbai-Agra national highway) from where Roman traders traded goods with mainland India via the western coast. With this significance at the background, a residential apartment in a newly emerging neighborhood was bought with a direct view of both the caves as well as the highway.

Earth Simulation Laboratory
The Earth Simulation Laboratory (ESL) is Barcode Architects' large-scale transformation of the Robert J. Van de Graaff laboratory, the former particle accelerator laboratory at Utrecht Science Park (USP), the Netherlands. The new ESL brings the different research groups of the faculty of Geosciences together in one location. It is a dynamic building, where the user can experience whether it is day or evening, whether the sun is shining outside or whether it is raining. The 7.000m² building has a program of various laboratories and research spaces for experimental and physical research, workshops, archive rooms and offices.
