The Island

Conceived as more than a conventional marketing facility, this Sales Office for a fast-developing community is designed as a cultural and natural history experience that introduces visitors to both the development and its surrounding landscape. Positioned adjacent to a protected wetland, the building reframes the sales process as a gradual immersion into place, allowing prospective buyers to understand the environmental and regional context before engaging with the project itself. Legend   Arrival begins with a transition from vehicle to landscape. Visitors move through a calming wetland garden where water, vegetation, pagodas, and patterned paving establish a quiet, reflective atmosphere inspired by multicultural Asian landscap... More

The TWO

The Two is one of the first buildings constructed in the Jimei New City district. The site is dominated on all sides by new construction, noise and visual chaos. The building is designed with maximum flexibility in mind because once development of the surrounding residential and commercial areas is complete the building will transition from the developers sales office into a Community Arts Center.  Legend An entry through a garden removes one from the hustle of the city. Six-meter tall curved walls of honed black basalt draw visitors in while screening undesirable views of adjacent buildings and construction. These walls create a sense of compression toward the entry, before releasing visitors into the open interior space.  ... More

University of Arizona, World of Words

Worlds of Words (WOW) is an international collection of children’s literature from around the world, the largest of its kind in the United States.  For years, the collection was housed within the College of Education’s old library space on the fourth floor.  As the collection steadily grew, the space struggled to support the 30,000 volumes literature.  A donation of 4,000 additional 1st edition signed books and over 100 original pieces of artwork (the Wong Collection) led to the need for a remodel to efficiently house, display and manage its growing collection. Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine

The Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona redefines the relationship between architecture, health, and community. As the nation’s first integrative medicine program, the Center translates a holistic model of care into built form, embedding mind, body, and spirit into a three-building campus for research, education, and public engagement. Rather than designing a conventional academic facility and layering wellness strategies onto it, the project treats architecture as an active contributor to health. Replacing a former asphalt parking lot at the edge of the medical district, the campus transforms heat-intensive ground into a shaded, landscape-driven environment that supports daily wellbeing while func... Sahuarita Regional Library

The Sahuarita Regional Library was envisioned as a new civic heart for one of Southern Arizona’s fastest-growing communities, responding to the urgent need for a modern, full-service public library that could support learning, collaboration, and community life. Positioned between elementary, middle, and high school and embedded within surrounding neighborhoods, the building functions as an extension of the educational environment and a daily resource for students, families, and residents. This close adjacency allows students to walk safely to the library after school, using it as a secure, welcoming place filled with academic, technological, and social resources. In a town with limited civic infrastructure and public gathering spaces,... More

Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center

Intended to introduce up to 1 million visitors a year to the wonders of Red Rock Canyon, the new Interpretive Facility differs from traditional visitor centers by emphasizing the specific attributes of Red Rock Canyon itself, in lieu of pseudo-natural imitations. The concept here is to introduce the visitor to the relevant science, art and culture that will enhance their experience in Red Rock Canyon; and then strongly encourage them to visit the nearby real thing. John Birkinbine III, AIA The Visitor Center responds to environment - transition zones alleviate shock to users’ senses. Controlling exposure to the sun provides shaded, cooler microclimates for outdoor exhibits and activities. Like the desert tortoise burrowing to re... More
