This two storey apartment is located on a trapezoidal site at the juncture of two roads, affording windows on three sides and a long view down the main road. Our brief was to make the spaces better suited for a young, active family of four. Most important to our work was to create an open plan on the living floor. Here we took down all the walls except for those defining the hallway and stair to the bedrooms. Complete refurbishment and extension of an end of terrace family house dating from 1905. Unmodernized since the 1950s, the corner house on Highlever Road was in a state of decay when Woldon Architects were first engaged. Significant water damage and decades of neglect were halted and renovations begun. Works included the addition of a carefully proportioned side extension and occupation of the roof void, to consolidate the house into a modern family home. Constrained on three sides and working within a small footprint on a tight site, the design brief concentrated on maximizing floor area and natural light. The redesign was approached in a three dimensional manner, reconsidering floor levels and their relationship to the street façade and connecting spaces. The house now occupies four floors and a roof terrace. Careful room organisation and material choices, such as limed oak flooring and glass handrails, have given the mews house a new sense of space and lightness. Natural light was at the heart of this project. Born out of the need to expand an Edwardian property for a couple, the core ambition was to create a flexible living space that reflected a new approach to contemporary design, characterized by light and simplicity. This rear extension gains in richness of space and adds over twenty square meters of footprint, having a more and better relations to the garden, and to the exterior as a whole. A new shopfront and interior for an opticians and new skin clinic in Pimlico, Victoria Satish Jassal Architects have redesigned premises for an opticians practice in Pimlico, Victoria. This involved designing the interior, creating a new shop front and turning an unused basement storage area into a new skin clinic, which has increased the floor area by 50%. The proposed shop front is a modern interpretation of a traditional Victorian shop front design found in the local area. Remodelling and interior design for an 18th Century end of terrace house We were asked to remodel and open up the ground floor of an existing house. In the original layout, the bathroom and kitchen were to the rear of the house, blocking views to the south-facing garden. This layout also prevented light from entering the centre of the house. We moved the kitchen to the front of the house, introduced full height windows to the sides of the house and removed the intermediate walls. A shower room has been carefully concealed behind a series of bespoke sliding shelves.
