Kunsthalle Mannheim Museum

The Kunsthalle Mannheim museum of modern and contemporary art was opened at the end of 2017 by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. As Germany's largest new museum building, it is a prime example of both civic commitment and architectural skill. The private patrons initiative – with SAP founder Hans-Werner Hector alone donating EUR 50 million – was what made the bold design at Friedrichsplatz possible. Based on the concept developed by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, a city within the city was created here, which reinterprets classic museum architecture while honoring Mannheim's historical city layout. The composition of room-forming cubes is visually connected by a sophisticated façade made of bronze-... More

ABWAB 2017

The content below is a draft for the AWAB 2017. The bullet points are key words that defined our path towards the design of the pavilion. - Materiality - innovative usage of the material - Ephemeral nature of the structure - Bed springs/mesh/transparency - On completion it should evoke hope - Hope is important - feeds every day - Recycled/green and 100% recyclable - Reuse and environment conscious - Cloud/light on ground but aspirational - Like ocean wave- momentary ABWAB 2017 The scope of the brief was to develop a temporary pavilion for hosting the ABWAB 2017. The interesting part was that it needed to be made of a waste material that’s left for recycling at Bee’ah’s yard. On visiting the yard we came across a massive... More

Public Library and Socio-Cultural Center in Aduana

This building, conceived with a hybrid use of Public Library and Socio-Cultural Center, is located in the seaside neighborhood of Javea, near the port. This is the reason why, after a process of architectural approach, it has been inspired by reasons related to the sea ... metal facade vibrates, has three dimensions and simulates movement, such as sea surface. The facade treatment, as a light metal skin that envelops the whole volume, aims to boost its weightlessness without touching the ground plane. It is a large box or floating cage, a huge metal fishing net as those in the nearby port. David Frutos The project addresses a dual program with a single compact volume of rectangular shape that uses all permitted parameters of local urb... More

House in Minami-tanabe

The existing row house on this long, narrow property measuring 3.75 m across and 16.92 m deep was torn down to make way for a new residence. The basement contains a multi-purpose space, the first floor an entryway, the second floor a combined living-dining-kitchen area and desk space, the third floor bedrooms and bathrooms, and above that there is a rooftop area. A building included inside the town The facade on the boulevard represents a major turning point although it remains integrated in the existing templates. The facility exposes itself as a symbol of renewal, at the same time respecting the balance of the urban context that surrounds it A building opened over the town. The copper woven mesh opens like a curtain over the city. It unfolds like a filter in front of a fully glazed façade. It shows off the facility while protecting it. The underlying play of transparency and light varies depending on the timeof day and school schedules. The life of the building reflects and is integrated in the lively downtown. Lindo Vale House

The House is located in the Rua do Lindo Vale, in the city of Porto. It is a row-house, 3 stories high, built on a plot of 5 m width and 40 m length. This building has four fundamental characteristics. The first is that the architects are also the clients of this project. The design of the Architect’s House is, undoubtedly, a unique challenge within the design of the House, as an architectural programme, due to the coincidence between the ‘architect’ and the ‘client’, and due to the possibility of the spatial realization of the architect’s own residential experience. The second characteristic is the sound sense of urbanity of this House. This is not a house built in the periphery of the city, in a plot of medium- or large-size, but a Ho... More

mesh

A temporary bar for a night event. The 3x3x5m metal structure was given; the skin is defined by an overlay of metal meshes and plastic screens. Light and color flow freely through the translucent materials, becoming a smooth cloud over the imposing geometry of the structure. From far, only the light is visible; while approaching the object, the thin silhouette and its texture reveal their rationality. The lightness of the construction allows the pavilion to be only a frame for the light it contains. More

Cloverdale749

Cloverdale749 is located around the block from the historically significant Miracle Mile hub comprising the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the A+D Architecture and Design Museum, and other noteworthy cultural destinations. Adhering to a strategy to maximize land use and capitalize on zoning, the building’s 10,500 square feet push against floor area and density limitations determined by the lot’s size and location. In essence, this project is a volume that cannot expand further. Cloverdale749’s footprint and volume were determined by zoning and devel- opment needs, yet within these parameters LOHA explored the threshold between the unit and the street, establishing a veil of transformable layers that promotes a hybridized relationship bet... Holmenkollen Ski Jump

The Holmenkollen hill plays a significant part identifying Oslo. In the Oslo panorama its characteristic profile is a clear icon, up close its majestic steepness rises towards the sky, making heads tilt and from the top, the panorama view towards the fjord are fantastic. It is a building beyond conventions, and it is no wonder that it is one of Oslo’s most visited tourist attractions. To create a new slope on the soil of the old requires full awareness of its traditions. The new Holmenkollen Beacon is extending tradition… to the sky! In emphasizing the existing landmark's values, it strives to keep the fine balance between majestic and simple, while introducing contemporary materials and design. Conceptually the project works wi... More

Kukje Art Center

For Kukje Gallery in Seoul, SO — IL has developed a master plan of the gallery’s “art campus” in the historic urban fabric of Sogyeok-dong, a lowrise area in the northern part of Seoul. Small alleyways and courtyard houses characterize this neighborhood, which is currently being infiltrated by newly constructed galleries, boutiques and coffee shops. One of the newly planned buildings within the master plan is a gallery. The structure is a single-story, clear-span art space. The ground floor will be used for large installations, performances and other functions, while the two sublevel floors house a sales room, a lecture space and storage areas. Circulation is pushed out to the edge of the building to maintain the pur... More
