Perched atop a steep river bank, the Chewuch Cabin offers equal amounts of shelter from and exposure to north-central Washington’s rugged beauty. A high, linear roof gestures emphatically toward the river and foothills beyond, forming a primary axis. A low, rectilinear form intersects, creating a distinctive cruciform plan that informs all design moves in this small home. The Copper Harbor house is perched on the shore of Lake Superior, nestled in a forested lot on the edge of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The cabin rises gently above the hillside on a galvanized steel frame, with views Northward toward Cache Valley and South toward Mt Ogden Peak and Snow Basin. Within the exposed steel frame, a wood clad box envelops two levels of living space; an open living dining and kitchen space over the more enclosed and private bedroom and bath functions below. Located on a rain-drenched site in the rugged, north-western foothills of the Cascade Mountains, this modest, sustainable building has a big presence in a big landscape. Surrounded by dramatic, mountain peaks, the site slopes to the east and overlooks a large woodlot. Our clients wanted a building that had presence in and subservience to the wild landscape. This duality became the thematic tag that informed the design.   In order to preserve the rugged landscape, we limited the building’s footprint to a 30’ by 100’ rectangle. The Park City Residence is a small mountain cabin located adjacent to the historic downtown area of Park City Utah. Working within the restrictive zoning ordinance provided by the city, the Park City Residence resembles a traditional mountain cabin. The design utilizes a sloped roof and traditional exterior form, while black wood siding and a metal roof reference the aging barns seen in the landscape of Utah.The interior however, is a contemporary intervention in contrast with the exterior.
