The  apartment  is  designed  for  two  people  as  a unique space with an embedded bedroom – this method is unique and consists of forming a new text inside the phrase we are used to. This minimalist one-bedroom apartment is a pied-à-terre for a couple who split their time between New York and Florida. Prior to the renovation, the apartment was dark, despite four west-facing windows along Central Park, so a primary goal was to make the space feel lighter and brighter. Conceptually, millwork volumes - rather than conventional partitions - read as floating objects while delineating the different spaces. This helps stretch the perception of space to the apartment’s perimeter walls. Revitalizing a storied structure in a small town, a historic train depot gets a new life as a colorful, dynamic dance studio. Brad Feinknopf In the small upstate New York town of Accord, a 1902 train depot remained a local landmark over the years, despite changing times and uses. The historic structure was one of several nearly identical depots dotted along the local train line, many of which remain today. The Accord Depot had many past lives – as a bed and breakfast, and most recently, a restaurant  as a community arts center, an ice cream shop, and most recently, a brief stint as a restaurant – which meant it endured many numerous incomplete and uninspired renovations over the years, slowly falling into disrepair.... This Buena Park home, designed in 1978 by Chicago architect Marcel Friedes, had not been updated since construction. The new owners wanted a total renovation with a floor plan to open the space and maximize natural light. The program called for a contemporary kitchen, new master suite, spa-like bathrooms, study, art studio, and multipurpose space for adults and kids. ​ At the center of the home was an enclosed two-story atrium, a unique element underused in the original design. Our plan reimagines the atrium as family space. This modernist brick home built in 1979 stands in playful contrast to its neighboring historic row homes. The new owners wanted a total renovation with an open floor plan filled with natural light as well as a new third floor addition with a master suite, spa-like bathroom, and sundeck. Program requirements included five bedrooms, contemporary kitchen, children’s play space, media room and ample space for art.   The objective of new design becomes clear upon entry to the home–capturing sunlight. Unique for a city lot, the footprint of the house repeatedly steps back from the south property line, forgoing square-footage for views of the sun and sky.
