RENOVATION AND REDESIGN OF A LISTED MODERNIST BUILDING
The name “Thalia”, inspired by the ancient muse of comedy and laughter, reflects the cultural concept behind the building.

The historical origins of the structure date back to 1829. Initially a circus, it was later used for theater performances, then evolved into a cinema with a café, featured three living flamingos in an outdoor enclosure, and operated as a club in the 1990s.

Throughout, the venue has always been synonymous with entertainment and culture.
In 1956, the building was redesigned by the Austrian architect Rudolf Vorderegger and became one of the few surviving examples of modernist architecture.

For all those who are not familiar with the Hamburg real estate market: Finding such a beautiful city villa is like winning the lottery. That's what the Hamburg family thought when they bought the house built in the 1920s. The family had fallen in love with the small, hygge-like structure and atmosphere of the house, but were used to the comfort of a new, ultra-modern penthouse building. Our challenge was therefore obvious: to preserve the charm of the old but place it in a new context, create new space and integrate it harmoniously into the existing, open up structures and thus create a refuge for the residents in the middle of the city with high design standards.

After a construction phase of two and a half years, the history-charged Fritz-Henßler-Berufskolleg, a vocational training institution in the city centre of Dortmund, has been extensively refurbished and enlarged by two additional buildings. The result is a complex of school buildings satisfying all demands on a modern and future-orientated learning environment. From an architectural perspective, an exciting dialogue between old and new unfolds both inside and outside.
