Progeny Winery

The steep slopes and higher altitudes of Napa Valley’s Mount Veeder region limit wine-producing land, while simultaneously isolating the vineyards from the valley floor. The site’s elevated terrain, made of once ancient seabed that has been pushed up into a mountain over time, creates a unique opportunity for a vineyard that ascends towards the sky. A monument to a couple’s marriage, the mountains, and the vineyards, the Progeny Winery Tasting Room buildings emerge from the peaks as two buildings that appear as one. Each of the roofs fold and float creating a connection to the mountains while establishing a new summit against the sky. Visitors approach the building at an angle that echoes the roof line. Covert

This Coombsville area winery is completely underground, out of consideration for nearby neighbors. Without disturbing the peaceful ambiance of the landscape, an undulating, sculpted concrete and stone retaining wall with entry portals, defines the face of the facility. The wall establishes an elegant presence while accenting the beauty of both the wooded hillside it encircles and the vineyards below. A trellis of willow at the North portal references the curve of the hillside. Inside, the tasting room, employee lounge and office functions are near the entrances to benefit from natural light. Odette Estate Winery & Caves

This third winery of the Plumpjack group is expected to produce elegant and feminine wines, which they sought to reflect in the architecture. The side view of the facility evokes the sweeping curve of a swan’s wing, inspired by the Tchaikovsky ballet character Odette. This unique production building adds an organic element to the light and modern hospitality facilities already on the property. The round footprint responds to its location, tucked into a natural cove made by hillsides on three sides. The living roof appears to have been pushed up from the earth to reveal the veil-like screen of perforated aluminum that shelters the work pad at the front of the facility.
