Studio Whitehorse

New England is populated with numerous examples of colonial-era structures that have endured for 200 to 300 years. Studio Whitehorse seeks to answer the question of how this typology can be updated and improved for the modern era. Based around the North American Passive House standard for energy efficiency, healthy living and resiliency in a four-season climate, this office, meditation space and music studio space over a partially-buried two-car garage seeks to answer that question. Daniel J. Cardon Starting from a simple form reminiscent of the traditional vernacular of the Cape Cod house, the studio is a celebration of local and natural materials selected for their durability and endurance on a site often facing the brunt of seasona... NetZero Rowhouse

NetZeroRowHouse began as two architects designing and building a home for their family in the Capitol Hill / H Street neighborhood of Washington DC.  A simple notion about adding solar panels started the journey to create a Net Zero Row House. Caption The original 1925 brick rowhouse was completely reconstructed and expanded.  The front façade and porch were retained to preserve the character of the street.  A third-floor addition, for the principal suite and home office, is setback from the existing roof line, creating a private roof deck.  The lower cellar level was fully excavated with a new entrance to access the accessory dwelling unit / rental apartment.  The addition is clad with a combination of...
