Pier 57 is a 1950’s feat of engineering – a 320,000 SF building which floats on concrete caissons in the Hudson river. This historic structure has been redeveloped in a collaboration with Google and Jamestown as a new cultural and community landmark in the neighborhood of Chelsea. This project was a full home renovation of an Upper West Side classic 8 pre-war apartment, meaning we updated all the flooring, renovated the kitchen, bathrooms, closets, and office space, then painted throughout. The cherry on top: we maintained and enhanced the pre-war charm with restoration and refinishing work throughout the apartment. This sizable Manhattan renovation found us overhauling a previously-combined two-unit condo in The Chelsea Mercantile, an iconic 19-story pre-war building in Chelsea. Our clients, a couple with three small children, acquired the enlarged 252 Seventh Avenue residence with an aim to blend modern comfort with the charm of yesteryear. Our originally client purchased a one bed, one bath co-op in a seven-story building in the storybook Greenwich Village neighborhood. Later, another one bedroom sponsor unit became available next to his, which he purchased in hopes of an apartment combination. We’re beaming about our recent co-op renovation on the Upper East Side. Located at Riverview South, a few blocks from Gracie Mansion, this two bedroom, two bath was a dated post-war home that hadn't been renovated for years. That’s when the client brought Gallery into the equation. Our recent renovation at 1035 5th Avenue found us in the middle of quintessential Manhattan. Overlooking Central Park, this beautiful Italian Renaissance Palazzo co-op is located on Fifth and 85th street, just down the street from The Met. When our client purchased this 4,000 square foot pre-war property, the space hadn’t been updated in more than 50 years. The vision for this renovation called for a complete design overhaul of the extensive space, while incorporating many of the prior architectural elements and elegant marble accents, while also creating an additional bathroom and powder room. Recognizing the critical need to accommodate its growing academic programs, NYU engaged Davis Brody Bond and KieranTimberlake to replace its one-story Coles Sports Center with a new mixed-use development to hold a diverse array of performing arts programs, rehearsal studios, and performance venues, as well as first-year student and faculty housing. Spacesmith designed and selected all the furnishings for the 735,000 sf building. This midcentury modern-inspired Riverside Drive Apartment is a combined 2,500-square-foot apartment. It is designed as a home for a family of five that would continue to accommodate the children as they grow older. The apartment renovation transformed the space by relocating the entrance and creating a generous foyer adjacent to the new enlarged kitchen. This minimalist one-bedroom apartment is a pied-à-terre for a couple who split their time between New York and Florida. Prior to the renovation, the apartment was dark, despite four west-facing windows along Central Park, so a primary goal was to make the space feel lighter and brighter. Conceptually, millwork volumes - rather than conventional partitions - read as floating objects while delineating the different spaces. This helps stretch the perception of space to the apartment’s perimeter walls. The living and bedroom spaces flow into one another, and when privacy is needed, hidden pocket doors recessed in the pantry volume can be closed. Studio ST Architects’ renovation of the 94-year-old Ansche Chesed Synagogue revitalizes the space to encourage a greater sense of community and to accommodate twenty-first century needs. The main project challenge was redesigning the landmarked synagogue to make the spaces feel more contemporary yet reflective of the building’s past. Studio ST upgraded the functionality, aesthetics and security of the 1927 Romanesque-Byzantine synagogue while relating to its historic features. This 1,800-square-foot apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side artfully combines three separate units into a flexible and cohesive space. The existing apartment, previously home to renowned novelist Philip Roth, comprised two of the building’s original units. The new owners engaged PJCArchitecture to incorporate a third unit to house their family of four with spaces for entertaining including an open kitchen, dining room, and family room. When our clients purchased the apartment, it required a substantial renovation to suit their functional needs and accommodate their growing family. Their vision was clear: they wanted an open, flowing space while preserving the original architectural details that defined the apartment’s character. To maximize the space, we positioned the kitchen within a niche that naturally connected to the living areas, creating a loft-like arrangement. We thoughtfully wrapped the kitchen around an awkwardly placed riser volume, carving out private areas within the larger open living spaces.
