Miguel CHEVALIER Complex Meshes 2015

For the Lumiere Festival, Miguel Chevalier presents the premiere of his new artwork "Complex Meshes" in Durham Cathedral, a building constructed at the end of the 11th Century and which represents the most accomplished example of Norman architecture in England. Following Chevalier's "Magic Carpets", projection on the floor of the nave of the former Casablanca Cathedral in 2014, "Complex Meshes" is a monumental projection at dusk on the exceptionally designed 'ribbed vault' ceiling of the central nave; a daring architectural feature which was way ahead of its time and which announced the beginning of the Gothic art style in architecture. An urban window: A public building in relation with its surroundings The cultural center, which will welcome a library, an auditorium and the extension of the dance and musical school, found naturally his location in the living heart of Saint Berthevin just by the Norman church. The very generous program is lay out in a two storey building withsimples volumes added in order to fiddle with a very delicate game of volume with the public square and the church. The aim is to enlight the forecourt of both building to structure the main square on the town. Higher volumes are set back as a courtesy to the Norman church.
