Residence CEDAR

The semi‐detached urban residence built in 1910 on the slopes of Mount Royal, near the city center, was acquired in 2020 by the current owners. The residence had to be renovated given its age, the lack of maintenance and the state of degradation of several elements. The building had been the subject of several more or less interesting and successful interventions by the previous owners. Nevertheless, several original elements were still present and needed to be highlighted. It should be noted that the original building had undergone an extension in 1920 designed by the Montreal architectural firm Ross and Macdonald. RJM apartment

A century-old duplex in Montreal's Mile-end, abandoned for several years, has been extended with a large rooftop apartment and a backyard bedroom wing on each floor. The project aims to answer the delicate and sensitive question of “architectural intervention on modest heritage. ". How to densify in a gentle way by adding new housing, while retaining the authenticity of the original design and the urban landscape of the street and the lane. LES FORGES - KNOWLEDGE CENTRE FOR INNOVATION

THE CONTEXT : This building is one of the main wings of the former Saint-Etienne arms factory. This industrial estate was built in 1864. It covers an area of twelve hectares to the north of the city centre. Designed in the spirit of the rationalist architecture of the 18th century, such as Claude Nicolas Ledoux’s saltworks or the Grand-Hornu near Mons, the factory is an industrial and military «palace» composed of white stone and red brick. It embodies the aesthetic ideal of an era intoxicated by the fortunes generated by the industrial revolution.
