The new Hospital of Ontinyent is located to the south of the municipality, in the “Casa Balones” industrial estate, within a heterogeneous area of buildings, farmland, and scattered public facilities.

The plot is roughly rectangular, measuring approximately 275 by 115 meters, with a slope equivalent to two storeys in both directions. The approach to the site distributes different volumes at the center of the plot, on a horizontal platform conceived as a large public plaza. This plaza is perforated by courtyards that bring natural light to the lower floors and support lush vegetation.

Estudio MMX interweaves open spaces throughout porous pigmented concrete villa
A sequence of open spaces with a gradual degree of intimacy allow residents to move gently from the public street-facing spaces to the private backyard.

Estudio MMX translated the client's wishes for a garden, terraces and a central patio into a playful dialogue between built and open spaces.

The architects implemented a 3x3x3 grid and distributed ten volumes organized around a central patio. Two units are interwoven that can be used separately. The compact porous massing creates ideal sunlight conditions without compromising privacy.

Red pigmented concrete was used throughout the project to shape pergolas, slabs, beams and walls as a unifying element.

Marked by existing pedestrian and vehicular traffic flows, the existing site condition includes the presence of two parking floors with one emerging on the surface, causing the plaza to be divided longitudinally by a 4-meter high wall that acts as a barrier between the different levels of the public space and the public’s interaction with the place.
